I'd be extremely suspect of a smith that claims dead-on @ 50 yards when bore sighted let alone 100. I typically bore sight myself and then shoot at 50. Fine tune at 100 yards. I typically have em Zeroed in 4-5 rounds.

If you can lock it down and get it on paper you can be exactly where you want in 2 shots. Shot- lock crosshairs on the shot and dial where you want it. Shoot and it should be where you want it

This what I do, usually 1 adjustment at 25 yards and 2 or 3 at 100 and I’m on. Too many wasted rounds on gun shop bore sighting.

Bore sighting don’t mean jack squat to what the gun will really do at a given distance. It just means the barrel and the scope are pointed at the same spot and you should be able to start shooting close distance and go back from there. Barrel harmonics and different loads will determine where the bullet lands after a bore sighting.

Could be a parallax problem, my son and I can’t shoot each other’s guns or sight them for each other, if I shoot his I hit 6-8” high with everything, if he shoots mine it’ll be 1’ or more low.

Put it in a good rest, put a target 25yd away, pull bolt, look down barrel get it on target, move crosshairs on scope to same point. It’s bore sighted. Now shoot to confirm.
Do all of mine this way.

Any gunsmith that says he can bore sight a rifle and it will be "dead on" at 100 yards isn't much of a gunsmith....

I know that a boresight is only to "get on paper". It was just the fact that he told me it was good to go and I was nowhere near paper. Again, my post stated that I took the dead-on comment with a grain of salt, because I feel like I have a good, general understanding of ballistics, and that I would've been expecting 6" +/- either way. However, to be near 20" off center post boresight, I feel, is a bit extreme.

As long as you confirm by shooting the weapon it doesn’t matter how off it is if you can the bullet impact from the first shot. After a quick bore sight, it takes me 2 shots to sight in to where I can kill a deer at 100yds whether it’s 4 1/2” low and 10” to the right or 13 “ high and 20” to the left
by simply moving the reticle to the first bullet hole.

I’d take it as a lesson learned and move on

I always just boresight at a target about 30-40 yards away.
-Take 1 shot at 30-40yds which is normally on paper
-Put gun in a Lead sled, put crosshairs on the bullseye at 30-40 yards...
-while holding the gun steady, move the crosshairs with the turrets to the bullet hole on paper.
-take another shot and it’s normally dead on at 30-40 yards
-move back to 100 and shoot 3 shots.
-make final adjustment from there ..
Last gun is sighted in took 6 shots
