if you guys are buying customs for the group size I'm scratching my head.
A Kia will also get you from point A to point B on time. Do you drive one?
I am a Tikka fan. I don’t understand your statement so you are saying that people are winning long range and bench rest competitions with factory rifles now.
I have a good friend who has been in predator control his entire 30+ year career (meaning he shoots more in 6 months than most people shoot in a lifetime). He has shot out barrels on many rifles and calibers with the amount of rounds he shoots controlling predator populations.
He has told me on several occasions that the Tikka T3X is the most accurate and smooth off the shelf gun he has ever shot and that is what he uses exclusively today. When it comes to shooting, when he opens his mouth, I listen.
I have been in the market for a 243 Win and the T3X will be my next purchase.
My second and third rifle I purchased were Tikkas T3. I still have them. I got spoiled by their smooth action and accuracy. No other rifle I own compares to the smoothness of the Tikka action.

That’s a stretch— I said nothing of the sort.
I was responding to the hunters who are questioning their custom purchases because you can get one hole 3-round groups out of a production gun at 100 yards.

Yea but he’s questioning your Kia statement, doesn’t make sense to me either.
I bought a Tikka T3X Superlite in 7mag for an upcoming mountain hunt and it shoots lights out with factory ammo. Action is super smooth too.
I actually went to the store to buy the Christiansen Ridgeline in 28nosler, but after comparing side by side, the Tikka was lighter, smoother and just overall fit me better.
You might lose $5 on that. I didn’t need this rifle but bought it anyway. I am scratching my head on my customs now.....I love following the APR threads but I don’t think I could justify another one with the way this thing shoots. Might be a fluke though, you never know.

Not a fluke. I have a CTR in .260 that shoots like that.
My new favorite gun in my Tikka 6.5 Creedmoor. Topped with a Leupold 5HD. I ordered the Leupold custom dial. I just started shooting beyond 200 yards with the new dial. So far, it is the best shooter in my safe. (I also love the ELDX ammo)

could be I was loony-- happens from time to time.
I guess what I was saying is that if the cheapest tight 100 yard group is your only objective then yes buying a custom doesn't make a ton of sense. Same way that a Kia is the cheapest way to get from A to B if that is your only objective. I buy customs not only for tight groups (at range-- tight at 100 yards doesn't tell you much) but also because they are custom-- one offs built for me to my spec and here in Texas by quality craftsmen with high standards. All of that is "worth it" to me.
Several years ago I got the itch for a 25-06. Looked at Winchester, and other brands, I had a couple of .243's , and had M700's that are good, but wanted something different.
Went into a gun shop one day and he had lots of Tikkas. he had one in 25-06, I looked at the T3 lite, and had to have it. It frustrated me for about 50 rounds, then all of a sudden, it dialed right in to some good shooting. I would have blamed myself, but I was shooting a couple of other rifles well that day.
Started doing workups and within a couple range trips I knew that was my rifle.
Fast forward a few years and I picked up a Weatherby MKV ultra lite in 25-06 from a friend that needed cash, and I had told him if he ever sold it to give me first dibs.
Fast forward a couple more years, while at the range with my oldest grandson he decided he wanted the Tikka for his rifle. He killed a doe last fall at one of the youth hunts at the Chapparal WMA. He decided he really likes deer hunting and wants to really go some.
The next oldest grandson got my dad's M700 adl in .243. Me, and several family members took their first deer with this rifle, so it must remain in the family to give to his first born.
Anyway, I got off the Tikka subject, they would be my first choice today if I were buying.
