I'm think like some said to start with the gas block and there is a heck of a lot of adjustment for gas bleeding. Gas Block, buffer and muzzle brake is really all you can do to tame a big bore AR besides making it heavier.
I was silly with ants in my pants and ordered a buffer( ArmaSpec) first, but it was half the price of the JP. I just installed a Superlative Arms Adjustable Gas Block from Midway took delivery of a Pachmayer recoil pad and waiting on the buffer which was shipped yesterday. I am eager to get back to the range to give these newly installed items a whirl. Meanwhile the purple can dissipate on my shoulder. Got through 8 rounds before I put it away. Anyway to tame the recoil...I am all for it.

Have not got back out yet...I have been fiddling with the fore end. BUT...I have gotten the Armaspec buffer, the spacer tube for rifle length with extra gaskets and the S.A. adj gas block. We are all set to go. This rig needs to get out and thump some pigs
I'll keep ya in the loop about how it goes. Thanks for asking.

I like my buffer and spring I put in.. I don't remember recoil before because I shoot supressed but it seems to be quiet, with less metal on metal sound cycling the action/spring..

I bought one of the 450 Bushmaster uppers from Midway also. I read this thread & really braced myself for some recoil.

Finally got around to shooting it last week - and I may have a new favorite caliber!

Recoil is certainly there, but really not as bad as the guns I hunt deer with (Muzzleloader & Shotgun). So I was pleasantly surprised that the recoil wasn't bad (to me at least) and my 1st group at 100 yards was right about 1", with Hornady 250 FTX Black ammo. I did add a cheap butt pad before shooting the 450 & that was bound to help some.

As good as the Hornady loads shoot, I may never even try the 300 grain bullets.

Anyway, for a fairly light gun & powerful load, an AR with one of the 45 cal uppers seems pretty hard to beat.

Yes, can't wait to put a .45 caliber hole in a Texas pig one of these days.
