Im not sure what the birds will be acting like. Never been on the place. I was going to buy the XR just worried how theyd treat me if a bird stumbles into 10-15 steps.

.300 Jarrett to the head or neck. :-)

If I go shotgun I have some old lead #4s for the Ithaca Mag-10

Whatever #4 is in the "turkey box" in the closet, and whatever choke is in the shotgun opening morning. Then I spend another three hours practicing my calls

Don't shoot them often but I bought a small box of Hornady Turkey loads. They are 3 1/2" and I believe they are either #4's or 5's.
I do know they kick pretty hard compared to my waterfowl loads.

I am shooting the Winchester Longbeard XR 3 1/2" #5's. Best patterning shell I have shot before the TSS loads. Picked up some Federal TSS 20ga. 3" #9 for the GF, and they are incredible with the factory full choke. Only tested out to 45 yds, but it is no contest as to regular lead #5's. Apparently the TSS shot is 60% denser than lead, so #9 TSS has as much energy as #5 lead (based off of research I've read), with over double the number of pellets. Only downside is the cost. They are pricey at $35-$40 for 5 shells.

whatever shell and choke you choose, shoot them together at least to 40 yds for patterning BEFORE you hunt. All guns are different. I've had a few loads throw all the pellets off to the side of my aim point. My 1100 preferred Federal #5 s.
No need to push the envelope at 50-60 yds.

#6 shot with 3" shells. My Benelli M2 with the full choke. If they are under 20 yds, I will aim where the neck meets the body. Further, aim at the head.

That being said, half of the turkeys I have killed could have been done with #8 shot and a .410. But if that's what I had they would have hung up at 40+ yds.

If you have ever hunted eastern turkeys in a pressured area, you would understand the long range requirements.

My wife and several youth I’ve taken have killed a dump truck load with 7 1/2 -2 3/4” 20g modified choke.... in the head they ain’t that tough.

I did guide a guy once with a full “turkey rig”... ported, Turkey choke, with duplex loads. He killed one at 60 steps as dead as I’ve ever seen an animal die! I was floored. There were like 8-10 pellets in the head. Might have been luck, but I’ve known this guy for years and I doubt luck had much to do with it. He’s a killer

No reason to overthink it. My go to is a 3" #4 Hevi shot. Over 40 yds, a .223 core-lokt works real well.
