For what you said you are realistically planning on hunting. It’s very hard to beat a 300 Win Mag. Ammo is readily available and the 180 Nosler Accubond is a hammer.
I'm with Paul, I want a 375 H&H with a low power scope and within 100 yards. I do have a very accurate 45-70 that would fit the same bill for up close and personal.
My two larger caliber rifles are the 7mm RUM and 375 H&H (also own a Marlin 45-70 SBL but really consider it as a close in caliber). For me, there is nothing in my world that one of these two calibers would not be very effective harvesting.
I would take that a step further and say other than the largest dangerous game, the 7mm RUM would be my choice for about anything I hunt.
since when was the 45-70 not a true big bore? it was mentioned several times
45/70 is a Big Bore, didn’t mean to imply it weren’t. Just so much talk of the whimpy medium bores. Its only banter for me as any rifle will kill anything.

I just followed this train off its rails.
i just wanted to see the response, since it and the 450 were the same bullet
I have a Mossberg Patriot in .375 Ruger that is light but haven’t shot it past 100. I recently traded for a Browning Bar in .338 Win Mag. Ammo for the .375 Ruger is in the $50’s. I bought ammo through Vizards for the .338 and it cost me $33 a box for the Hornady 225 grain SST’s Superformance ammo. I would go with the .338 and buy several boxes of ammo and then dies.
