Such ammo is very expensive from stores. Are you already comfortable with accurate use of such hard-kicking, LOUD pistols? You might find a Contender, in 7mm tcu a lot tamer to use, with at least 50% more power and range than the .44's, altho a longer barrel is used/needed to attain that speed and power.
    So when did a 150 grain 7mm bullet at 1800fps out of a 14” barrel equal 50% more power than a .430” 180 grain bullet at 1800fps out of a 8” barrel??

I agree, sorta. You can make the trigger anything you want it to be except fast. Lock time is what gets you on any single action revolver. You have to maintain that hold on the target while the single action hammer makes the long trip to the firing pin. Ain't much, but it's there and it makes a difference. But......as the owner of one S&W Model 57 and four Ruger single actions, you can see what I enjoy shooting.

Actually, OP, you can't make a bad choice if you're intending to shoot factory loads only. If you intend to load hot and heavy, the Ruger or a Freedom Arms, or a BFR are good factory choices,, the Ruger being the most economical.

Edit: One thing to consider is the fact that quality control is hit or miss in Rugers these days. I hear lots of stories among the single action crowd, but I don't have first hand knowledge because all my Rugers are fairly old except for the SS I just traded for a couple months ago.

                1. Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag

                or

                2. Smith and Wesson Performance Center 629 Hunter .44 mag

                Thanks.
You didn't state your purpose but I will assume hunting will be involved.
The better buy for the money in my opinion is the Ruger. If you get the bigger Ruger I would suggest the 454 Casull version especially if you handload. For light loads you can shoot 45 colts in it, handload a 44 mag equivalent, or go to a power level the 44 will never achieve. My favorite med load in the 454 is the 250 XTP at 1450fps.

Technically he's not wrong if your looking solely at muzzle energy. At 50 yards the 7mm passes the 44 because of the vastly higher BC. For short ranges I'd still recommend the easier to handle revolver with a big bullet. However, if the plan is to go 100 or farther, a single shot pistol firing a rifle round is a solid choice. In the contender line up I would go with something bigger than the TCU, the Waters or something in the JDJ line would be a much better choice.
