I have not read the whole thread so I’m sorry if it been brought up. Academy is blowing out there VX1 scopes. I paid $112+tax for one about a month ago. I’m not sure if they have any left but I would check. They also had the VX2 on sale as well but I don’t remember the price of it. I hope this helps.

I just don't get how you can say Nikon's warranty isn't any good. All the big optic's companies have pretty similar warranties. Nikon's No-Fault Warranty is one of the best. A pair of binos falls out of the back of your UTV, Nikon will fix or replace them even though it wasn't their fault. I have offered to help out guys who have complained about Nikon's warranty only to never hear from them again. I do not work directly for Nikon but I have been doing freelance work for 10 years for a company that does. I am happy to help you if you have any issues at all.
That being said, Nikon's BLACK FX1000 scope is one heck of an optic. All you need to stretch out the distances on your longrange shooting. A nice selling point right now if Nikon is giving away a BLACK Series Mount with the purchase of a BLACK FX1000 scope. $149 mount for free. I just bought a BLACK FX1000 and will be putting it on a 6.5CM as soon as we get some cooler temps here in TX.
Take a look at the BLACK FX1000 and see if it doesn't convince you. Also, if anyone has issues with a Nikon Sports Product, drop me a note and I will be happy to help you out any way that I can.

Didn't read all the comments.
I bought a Freedom 3-9x 40mm Tri-MOA Reticle to go on a youth rifle and I was very impressed with the quality. If your budget for a scope is $200-$300, I would definitely recommend it over Vortex, Nikon, ect.
I also have a VX2 4-12x40mm and a VX3i 4.5-14x40mm. I can tell no difference in the clarity of the Freedom glass vs. the VX2. The only thing I don't like about the Freedom is the tacticool oversized magnification ring and knobby turret covers which feel and look (imo) cheap. Also, no zero stop...but that's to be expected with a no frills budget scope and the reason I chose the Tri-MOA reticle...to assist with hold over.

Eye relief for a young shooter is difficult to master. Even more difficult with a good case of buck fever.
You might consider a fixed 6x or 10x scope for him. For the money, you get better glass than a variable, since there is fewer internal mechanics.
I shoot a fixed 6x on a couple of my rifles, my daughter has a fixed 10x on hers. I’ve killed animals at over 300 with the 6x, and rang steel out past 500 with it, and never felt lacking. I have had really great luck with the Leupold FX3 and the SWFA scopes. I’ve also owned old Redfield, Burris and Weaver fixed scopes. All have been great.

I can vouch for this statement. Had a scope get damaged during the flood and was worried that the warranty wouldn't cover the scope. Not only did Nikon replace it, they even upgraded. No questions asked.....

Also, There is absolutely no way a vortex viper or lower even almost compares to the glass quality of a Leupold VX2 (now freedom) or higher. I own one viper and have owned 3 others, I also own 2 VX1, 1VX2 and 2 VX3 Leupolds. Every Leupold I have is much better optically than any of the vipers I have had.
Feature wise I can agree Vortex, Athelon, Nikon and others have more features than the leupolds (at least under the $800 range). If you want features then by all means they may be your better choice, but if clear optics are what you are looking for nothing compares to leupold in that price category.

Thank you Mr. Wilson for writing about your CS experience. I truly do not know one person who has ever been denied let alone 10. The only reason I even mention this is because Nikon takes CS so seriously. If you or someone you know is having a problem with getting warranty work done, drop me a note. While I do not work directly for Nikon I have been doing freelance work with them for almost 10 years now and I know a lot of folks who can help. There's a reason they call it a, No Fault Warranty.

I sent in (3) older Leupold Vari-X IIc scopes to Leupold to get cleaned. fixed or replaced.
Leupold replaced 2 of them for free with the newer VX IIIi.
Compared to the one old Vari-X IIc that I did get back the 2 newer VX IIIi's that Leupold sent me Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuCK!
As far as the hype/ BS Leupold is putting out there about their $200 Freedoms being as good as a VX II? Horse hockey! Leupold is going down hill IMO.
Buy a nice Bushnell or even a Burris they both have outstanding warrantees. They are just as good as any lower end Leupold like a Freedom. PLUS they probably cost less?
NOTE:
Leupold told me they "screwed up" when they first sent me (2) POS Freedoms instead of (2) VX IIIs they agreed to replace my Vari-x IIc with. I took one of the Freedoms out and eyeballed it. What a POS!!!!!! Called Leupold up and they admitted it was a "mistake" and would send me the VX IIIi. Yeah right?! It was a mistake. Uh HUH?
Like I said I think good ol' Leupold is heading for the crapper!
Another NOTE: I like the old gloss black scopes. I'm not a fan of the matte/ flat black. They look like dog doo sitting on top of a beautiful wood Remington 700 BDL.
Special NOTE: For under $400 you ain't going to get to see the man on the moon. But I'm not shooting for the moon and I'm cheap.Last edited by texaspacker; 07-27-2018, 03:50 PM.
