Good starter rifle?

.25-06, too much recoil for young kid ... its a .30-06 case! I've had one a long time and killed a lot of deer with it but even in a ruger #1 it still packs a kick.

youre half right. it is a 30-06 case....but shooting bullets at max of 117 grains which makes a large difference compared to a 30-06. My rifle also weighs right at 10 pounds which helps a lot compared to a ruger #1.

...but, to each his own.

got mine as my first rifle when I was 7 and its still my go-to
shot 70 grains bullets when I was young
does plenty on hill country deer and a good varmint round

I have always recommended that folks avoid giving kids ARs or other semi-automatic firearms as first guns...

I would go for a youth model bolt action in 22-250, 223, or 243. I started on a 270 at age 11.

Easy enough to make them single shot with an adjustable gas block.
