    Good starter rifle?

Wanting to buy my little 7 year old Nephew a rifle for Christmas. Any recommendations on a starter rifle for a little one?

223 or 243 are very good starters. The 25-06 is one of my favorite but might be a bit much for a 7 yr old starting out

I let young kids hunt at my ranch (at least 1 or 2 each year). Each time I let them shoot my AR-15 with 1-4x red dot scope. Practice a few times then load up the good 68 grain hunting rounds and good to go.

Much rather have them shooting something they're not afraid to shoot. Kids under 14 seem to miss with everything else but they love the AR for some reason.

Been looking at the 22-250, ever have any experience with them?

6.5 grendel micro action: howa or CZ. It will kill up to elk, has low recoil, good range, and they won't outgrow it.

In fact, I'd love one now just as a lightweight pack rifle.

What's the intention of the rifle? Learn to shoot or hunt?

That sounds almost too good to be true, not saying
It isn’t, just seems like a lot of versatility for 1 round.

My son started with a Savage Axis .223, the round is plenty for Texas whitetail, but I do have some regret not getting a little more calibur. The savage is sufficient, but has a really crappy trigger. I have a $17 kit that includes a new spring and a bolt to reduce trigger weight and over travel.

Ruger 10/22. If it's just for fartin around with rabbits and whatnot.

For bigger stuff an AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel.

While I understand and appreciate the versatility and practically of an AR for kids, I like a more traditional rifle for a first gun. Why not look at the CVA Hunters at Academy? Maybe in a 243. Or there are some great deals online on Thompson Compass and Savage Axis rifled with the mfr rebate. You could get those in everything from a 223 to 22-250 to 243.

As a parent and an uncle I ask, if you buy him a starter one, will his parents buy him another one down the line when he gets older?? If yes, then whatever your budget is, but if NO, then I would get him one that he can grow up with. Just a thought. But which ever one you choose will be perfect.

30-30 iron sight lever action. Versatile gun. Fun to shoot and something they can grow up with. Great gun to pass on to their kids when they grow up.

lol that’s the funny part. The kiddo hasn’t seen his dad in years and is at my house everyday and just about every night. Love the kid like my own so I wanna make this one a special gift. He gets so fascinated with all of my guns and bows and deer mounts.
