I'm not too savvy on the process of putting a new barrel on or anything to be honest. He just said he likes to work off of the Remington 700's the best so I got me one. I'm definitely no expert. I wish I knew more so I'd know what I should ask.
You've come to the right place. I know very little but what I do know, I learned on here or from people here.

A good gunsmith can make a trued 700 action with a new SS barrel shoot like a dream. But you are pissing into the wind rechambering your current barrel or just installing a new barrel. The things Blake mentions are vital to get that rifle shooting well.

If your gunsmith is good, he should take time to explain how the trued action, barrel, properly fit stock, trigger, and good ammo will all work together to make a great shooting rifle.

That Fireball will be a blast to shoot. I have a .221 Fireball necked down to 20 cal (20 Vartarg). My favorite rifle to shoot

I always hear about people getting E.R. Shaw barrels. Are they any good? That is a good deal on the Wilson barrel. Is that a heavy barrel?

I'll have to remember to ask him to do that for me. I never thought about having him blueprint any of that stuff.

Shaw is the lower end of the barrel makers. Not saying one can't shoot well but it costs the same to thread, chamber and fit a Shaw as it does a Bartlein or a Krieger. Personally, I'd go with a better barrel. Use any of the cut rifled barrels and you'll have no doubt. I have a Brux barrel on a .308 built on a 700 action that is STUPID accurate. I shot a 10 shot ladder at 300 yards during load development that was inconclusive. 10 shots I could cover with a quarter. Did I mention, that was at 300 yards?!?

If your GS doesn't true the action, then you're putting a freshly machined barrel into that dirty (untrue) action threads

just curious, has your GS done this service before ? Is he chasing threads with a tap, or single-point cutting centered on the bore axis ?

Not to mention, especially newer Remington actions look like they were machined with a Dremmel tool and hacksaw. I took one to my smith about 2 years ago and the face of the action and the bolt face were both 11 thou out.

Thanks man I appreciate all of y'all. I'll be sure to ask him all these questions, might have a note book in my pocket to remember it but that's alright as long as it's shootin and functioning like it should.

I haven't heard of those before but about the only ones I've ever heard of are the Shaw and Lilja barrels. I feel like if I'm gonna have one done I better not skimp on the barrel and get a good one.
