    Bolt action or semi 22?

Which do you prefer? I'm thinking about trading my old semi-auto 22 for a new bolt action. Easier to clean, arguably more accurate, but obviously slower follow-up shots. Anything else I'm missing?

Which bolt-action do you have, and what do you think of it? Brand recommendations?

    Thanks.

I have an older model Remington 541T bolt and love it. Ruger 10/22s are fun but I like the bolt guns. If I was looking new right now for a bolt CZ and Ruger would get my first looks, just imo.

I started out with a Ruger 77/22 then moved on to a Ruger 10/22. Both are as accurate as you'd ever need a plinker or varmint gun to be. Maybe even a little better than you'd ever need with the 10/22 because there are all kinds of upgrades for them.

Personally I prefer a semi auto. But I do quite a bit of prairie dog shootin so it's not uncommon to need quick follow up shots. Especially when the little ones are out and you have multiple targets standing right beside eachother at times.

But for a bolt action the Ruger 77/22 gets my vote.

I would be if they wouldn't have that stupid backward safety.

It took a bit but I got used to it.

My ruger 10/22 is sub MOA at 100yds. Bolts are not arguably more accurate.

I like the 10/22 because of the aftermarket customizations that are available.

Why not both? .22's are usually very affordable, so I probably wouldn't be trading one for another. Unless you are just tired of the one you have and you know you won't regret trading it later on... which I've done.

Ruger 10/22's are great because there is so much out there for them. I've never left one in the factory configuration. Different stock, different barrel, different mag release, etc... I've built some nice ones.

But I really love a good bolt action rifle. The only difference with a .22 from my centerfire rifles is the magazine. To me, .22 magazines have determined how much I like the rifle. A design like the Ruger rotary magazine is nice, so I'd probably lean towards a 77/22 if I were buying a new bolt action. Some have really cheap feeling or ill fitting magazines. I had an older Marlin that had a slim metal magazine. Loved the rifle, but cursed it every time I had to insert or release the magazine, as it never seemed to want to click into place... and when it did, it didn't want to release when I was done. Worked on the catch several times, and never did get it working perfect.

                All the best,
                Glenn

I have 10/22's so i love the ruger m77/22 and the ruger Americans do to the magazine interchanging. I hate buying mags that only work in one gun so it's only ruger from now on for me.

I like the idea of a savage fvsr. 16.25" threaded from the factory. Easy peasy plinker

They arguably are. Semi-autos need to be able to cycle under adverse conditions, and as such are not machined to as tight tolerances as a bolt action can be...otherwise they won't cycle.

Additionally, if a rifle uses a gas system to cycle the action that's not blowback, then you'll have a moment on the rifle from the redirected gases before the bullet leaves the barrel. While very minute, it will still have an effect (and no, I'm not referring to movement of the action, just the perpendicular force exerted by the gas).

This is why you won't see anyone winning benchrest or PRS matches with a semi auto.

We are talking about .22lr here. All are blowback.

We are talking about .22lr here, not PRS or BR competition.

I stand by my comments as I WAS talking about .22lr.

I have to go along with Outbreaker here; for everyday 22lr.

I've had numerous bolt 22's and numerous autos. The auto's I've shot are just as accurate as NORMAL everyday bolts. Can't say about BR.

Having had a Savage, CZ, Browning, Remington and Winchester bolts they are all gone now. 22lr and bolt just doesn't go together for me. I kept buying them only to be dissatisfied. I quit buying them, all tho, the CZ calls me once in a while.

Now 22 mag, a bolt is just fine.
