This, CZ makes a great little .22 and much better quality than the marlins and savages.

If I were looking for a smaller framed kid the henry maybe a little big. The CZ will fit a youth much better but he will still be able to shoot it as an adult. Sister got one for her first rifle and I still will steal it to go shoot now at 23. And I am also of the train of thought of start them out with irons and and a bolt action. Make them learn to shoot from the ground up other wise they can create bad habits speed shooting instead of aiming. Then progress them on to a semi or add a scope to their rifle.

      any advice?

6.8 SPC. That's what I got my little girl anyway.

I'd go Henry for the long-term beauty of the rifle. You can always get him a 10/22 or something else later.

The Golden Boy list is above the budget at $550. The big loop is available for $50, which would make a nice birthday present and you install it together.

If you want him to pass it down you should go with the henry

I still have the marlin .22 bolt that my dad bought over 40 years ago.

Savage axis .243 is a great gun and tack driver. Too good of a deal to pass for what it does. I gotta marlin 93a lever action .22 and love it. Half dollar size groups at 100 yards with a tasco from wally world!

                            Personally, keep it simple.

Nice wood stock on something like a 7 or 700 Rem in 243 or 7-08?

Just input on what I have and value more than the $.

10/22. Good starter to work on the basics of shooting. Fundamentals are the same whether shooting a 22 or a 338 Lapua.
There is plenty of time to move him up to a 223 or bigger. When he's ready.

Its just me but I wouldn't choose an autoloader for a small child's first rifle. The 10/22 while a fine .22 is heavier and more complicated than a bolt gun.

CZ's are pretty nice rifles that come with nice walnut stocks and deep polished bluing. Something if taken care of makes a wonderful piece to pass down.

Here is my wife's 452 American that I cut the barrel down on. Its a sweet shooter to boot.

Here is a 455 model I made a butter knife handle for which gives it a classic European look. It can be shot with irons or glass.
