    Sons first rifle

would like to get him something he will be proud to own and pass down to his kids one day. he will be 7 dec 9th. thinking maybe a 10/22 wood stock, henry lever action 22. would like to keep it 3-350 and under. he shoots his sisters savage rascal 22 good. but wanna get him his own. if he was a little bigger, id look at a 223,22-250 type rifle. hes just so small.

    any advice?

Ruger 10/22. best tool for the job.. and when he's older, you can customize it together.

One of the things we do is use a pop up prairie dog target... 25 yards... Teach him to shoot, stay on target with both eyes and pop it again every time it pops up. It will help him learn follow through, trigger control, sight picture alignment, etc...

of course invest in A LOT of 22 rounds... I'm down to 1000 now, and that probably won't last but 2 trips to the range.

A savage mark II bolt action with the sporter barrel and decent glass (vortex crossfire or equivilent) would make a great first rifle and come in pretty close to your price range. I would start him out on a single shot or bolt action to encourage accuracy over speed, but he may already have that down and ve ready for a semi. in that case, its hard to go wrong with a 10-22.

What about a Herny Lever Action .22?

Both of mine have a Savage Mark II in 22lr. Both are blued steel/wood stocked and have a BSA Sweet 22 3-9x40 on it. Under $225 set up. Their deer rifles are heirloom pieces (to us anyways, that I purchased). Neither were under $350 each though.

There's a Marlin (I forget the number) thats got the wood stock and tube feed. IIRC it's "full sized" but it's a good little gun. Wife got my son one (well, me haha) when he was born. Father in law has one for the older grand kids to practice with.

.22 mag? Little more power, no kick.

If i was getting a .22 rf for a youth I would seriously look at a CZ 452 Scout. It not eactly an hierloom piece but it's close and much better than a savage or marlin bolt iMHO. The Scout fits into your budget too. The full size 452/3 or 455 CZ's are another option.

I like the henry for a kid (or myself), especially the shorter barrel and big loop ones

My first gun was a Rossi .22 pump carbine, along with every man in my family. still use it today.

I have two boys and had the same thoughts as you. 1st one got a 22 mag henry lever action, second a ruger 10/22. Both are excellent choices
