Your thoughts on the 6.5 Grendel?

Just curious what you guys think about this round, as I've been researching it a lot lately and it seems to be a great round for AR set up. It would be primarily used as a hunting rig (white-tail, hogs, etc.), and maybe an occasional distance gun. I reload, so ammo isn't a big concern after I drop the money on a bunch of new brass. Looks like Alexander Arms sells the complete rifle, but didn't see any others that offer a complete guns. Maybe piecing it together would be the way to go.

What I like is the lower recoil opposed to getting a .308 or 6.5 creedmore in an AR, and I know it probably won't perform like either of those 2 rounds but it still seems like the round can be very accurate for some distance. I already own a .308 in a bolt gun, and just was thinking about a new AR in something different. Is an 18" barrel optimal? Look forward to hearing what you say

I built one with a 20" barrel and love it. My daughter shot a deer with it last weekend and he dropped in his tracks. 123 gr amax did a lot of damage!
I reload also but brass is high dollar. We've been buying hornady ammo at $23/box until I get enough brass to start reloading.

I'm looking into piecing one together as well. I received an Ar15 lower for my birthday. I think it will make a great deer rifle for the wife and kids. The only downside is expensive brass. I think I read 19.5" plus on barrel length if wanting to perform at long distance. I'm waiting for a gunshow to find an upper. Where have you looked for uppers?

I haven't really looked at uppers yet. I'm not quite to the point of shopping for one, just trying to figure out if I want this particular caliber.

I bought an odin 20" barrel with matching bcg at joe bob outfitters. Can't remember where I found the mags.

Built an 18" barrel from underground tactical. Sub moa with hornady 123 grain SST. Has killed everything Ive shot with authority...it my 90% gun and I wouldn't have any other. I like it that much.

                    Better round than a 300 Blackout? Pros/cons

Love my 6.5 Grendel. Custom build with Lilja barrel shoots dime sized groups. Check this site out for more good info from peeps that shoot far more than I do: 65grendel.com

I have 2 of the 6.5's. One is a 16'' and 1 is a 20''. Built both from parts. The 7.62x39 mags work ok on the Grendel. And 6.5 mags aren't hard to find. In a pinch, the 7.62 brass can be loaded for Grendel. It is just a blown out 7.62x39. I found a batch of Lapua at a gun show, ran it through the dies, and been Grendel ever since. Wolf makes ammo, but man is it hot. I have blown a couple of primers, so I pulled the bullets and dumped the powder. Started over on those. It is a pig whacker for sure. Haven't tried it on deer yet. Also haven't tried the Hornady ammo, but I would expect it to work pretty well.

I put one together last year but haven't harvested a deer with it yet as I've lost my lease It is a great shooter with less than 1 MOA with the factory Hornady 123 gr SST round. Ballistically it should be good for about 800 yds. The 123 grain at around 2500 fps (Factory load) still holds 1000 lb/ft2 @ 400 yards which should put a deer down if placed in the right spot. I plan on using mine on a deer ASAP.

Upper is the same for any short cased round, Bolt and barrel is the only difference. Sounds like you are building kinda like I built mine. Got the lower for Christmas and the upper came on my birthday a week later, both Anderson pieces. Everything else came out of the Midway catalog as I like to round up to give the NRA a little $. You can get it cheaper and larger variety by shopping around but I watched the catalog for sales. 20" SS Shilen bull barrel and CMC single stage trigger is all I really splurged on. Lots of fun out there on the web, from history on round development to Youtube videos showing how to perform each step in the build. Have fun with the build!
