    Critique My APR Build

I've been wanting an APR for a year or so now and had a really good visit with Jimmy at their shop about a week ago. He was very helpful and I'm getting close to heading back to put together an order.

I am wanting to build a hunting rig. I want it to be really light and compact for the blind, the Jeep and the brush and maybe an occasional trip to the mountains. It will primarily be used for deer, hogs and predators but I've always wanted to shoot an elk and maybe one day I will. I don't think I'd ever shoot an animal past 400 yards. I'm not interested in long range target shooting. I do not hand load. I want the rifle to be enjoyable to shoot.

Here is what I'm leaning towards. It's basically their Maverick with an upgraded stock and Timney trigger. If you were looking for what I described above in a rifle, what would you do different?

    Caliber: 7mm-08
    Action: Trued Remington 700
Barrel: Shilen Sporter #4 Contour Barrel
    Barrel Length: 20 inches
Stock: McMillian Mountaineer Ultralight in GAP Camo
    Fluting: Straight Fluting
    Trigger: Timney
Cerakote: Undecided but probably either a grey, green or tan to match one of the colors in the stock

I'll be topping this gun with a Zeiss HD5 5x25 - 50 scope with Talley rings.

Really light and compact is the goal , then you go and put a 5-25×50mm scope on it? When you never plan to shoot over 400.

I think he is just using what he has. What'd you suggest for a scope on this build?

And I'd say a grey barrel would look good!

This is exactly the case. I already own the Zeiss and don't want to spend any more money alongside this rifle build on more optics!

buy any out of the box rem 700 with 7mm-08 barrel. Dont really see the reason behind a Custom 400 yd brush/truck gun.

You can lay down at night with any old gal with a pulse but if you can pull it off why not lay down with a beauty queen?

I would agree but there's nothing "beauty queen" about a maverick APR.. . but its your gun and good luck with it.

I've been interested in APR builds recently as well. I'm curious on your take on what an APR Maverick is good for? It's been fun researching a bit about custom guns and what not.

You are on the right track. No critiques but some suggestions.

I have a Mountain rifle built by APR with a bartlein #4 cut at 22". It feels perfectly balanced so you might want to keep that extra couple inches of spout. 22" is easy to move around in a blind.

Love the 7mm-08 but you might want to consider 308 if you don't handload. More variety of factory ammunition and heavier bullet weights if you ever need them. Can't go wrong with either but the 308 might be a little more versatile. If I was going short action other than 308 I would take a strong look at the 6.5CM.

They will build you a really nice rifle that will so far outperform a typical off the rack 700 you cant even compare them. Several cerakote colors that would look great on that rifle. I might try armor black.

Trade that scope for something lighter.

id go with a Jewell trigger, Mcmillan with edge fill, and a Proof Research barrel.

I would sell the big scope and buy a 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 that would better match your build and intended use.

I'd upgrade the shilen to a bartlien. Lilja. Krieger. One of those 3. Just not a fan of Douglas or shilen. Always has bothered me that shilen offers different grades of barrels. Lilja etc will give you one grade. The best they can. Yeah I know some shilen shoot bla bla. EVERY bartlien and lilja and krieger I've messed with has been a hammer.

I'd upgrade the trigger to a jewel as well. IF you went timney I'd go with the Calvin elite tuned pretty light. As in a pound or so.

I'd go with an unfluted #3.

I'd ditch that scope and go with a 2-12 VX6.

How much do you think I could get for the Zeiss? Its never been mounted a rifle and is still in the box.
