Multi purpose as in any varmint? .204 fur friendly yet flat enough and fast enough to sit on pdog field for extended sessions.

Multi purpose as in deer and varmints? .22-250 enough thump for pigs and deer as well as varmints but not as fun not being able to see your hits like you can on a lighter caliber

I use a .223 but I also skin them and don't want them tore up bad. For foxes it wouldn't be very good. 22-250 isn't bad on pelts either with the right bullet and it'll straight dump a coyote. If you don't care about the pelts,.243 using 58 grain Hornady Superformance. If you're wanting an all around predator huntin rifle I'd think more along the lines of a centerfire .17

Whatever you choose get good enough to shoot a chosen flea crawling between two hairs, then all you have to do pick the flea crawling into the ear hole, no tracking, no wondering they'll be drt.

22-250 is a great round for varmints but i recently switched to 6.8 so hogs wouldn't run off and it also wont destroy yotes and smaller predators.

                    243. Look at the ones that win the biggest coyote contests all shoot 243. If going after cats and fox 223

I think a lot of it depends on what you are using it for, what kind of terrain you are hunting, the type of varmint you are hunting and, if fur bearing, do you care about keeping/selling the hides.

That being said, I use a number of calibers depending on the answers to the above questions and for me, that changes quite frequently up here in Wyoming.

7mm Ultra Mag for when all I want to do is kill them and turn the coyotes inside out, it is a windy day (quite often up here during the winter months, and the distances are long.

220 Swift has been my go to varmint gun for years for most all conditions and I don't see that changing any time soon.

17 Remington for shorter range calling on calmer days and when I am in country that has a lot of red Fox.

222 Remington for pretty much the same reasons as the 17 but it is a little better on coyotes than the 17 at 300 yards and closer.

22 mag for short range calling in tight quarters. I have an H&k model 300 that hits like a tank using the Winchester 40 gr HP. 250 yards and closer it is extremely deadly.

223 - I have a Bushmaster Varmint Special that I thought I would use more when I bought it but because of all my other varmint calibers, it is pretty much a safe queen.

So, even for just me, the best caliber changes based on a lot of factors. If I had to pick just one though, give me my 220 Swift any day of the week.

Yes sir I know it's a open ended question but I was wanting to know everyone's opinion. I will be shooting anywhere from 100yds to longest shot being around 500yds. As for keeping fur guys I'm not really to concerned about about that at this time. My budget will be around $1,500 so is it worth buying a new bolt gun or just buying a white oak armament predator upper with a good scope and dropping it on my lower in .223. Just from me looking around a bit it's kinda hard to find a .220 swift and .204 ruger, so maybe 22-250 and .243 would be a good choice for a bolt gun.

I think your question was a good one and very appropriate to ask. My comment about that popcorn was that it is one of those questions where everyone will have a different opinion for a lot of reasons.
For $1500 you can set yourself up with a very nice rifle in whatever caliber you choose.
If you do not reload, I would recommend the 22-250 first and 243 second because factory ammo is readily available for each of those calibers. The 220 Swift, my all time favorite, is really built for those who reload.
                                Good luck with your choice!
