Anyone use 150 grain SST's in their .308?

I finally got some dies for my .308. I bought some 150 grain SST's. They didn't have much choice really. I was going to buy some game kings also but I only had so much on my debit card. My choices were 150 grain game kings, 150 grain SST's and 180 grain NBT.
I still need to get some primers but I have some IMR 3031.
I will be using my .308(Howa 1500 w/20" #6 contour barrel) this year during our firearm season. This is my first year to use a rifle other than using my .450 Bushmaster. Pretty hyped about it.

Published starting is 40.2 gr going up to 43.5gr and that is compressed.

Wish I could help you more. I shoot 168gr bergers.

I load and shoot them out of my remington. I love how the bullet performs on deer and pigs, it just turns the chest cavity into soup. I also load that bullet for my 243 and 270.

So should I be advised not hit them in the shoulder?

Slightly quartering away or broadside shots only. Unless I losing one whole side right?

You didn't indicate what kind of game you plan on hunting, but 150 gr. bullets should be fine for medium sized game like whitetail deer and hogs. I'd use the 180 gr, bullets for larger game such as nilgai. When I was younger, I read quite a bit about hunting in Africa. All of the famous hunter/authors like Ruark, Capstick, and Wally Johnson always advocated the shoulder shot whether for meat, or dangerous game. They called it "the meat shot", and said that if the shot didn't immediately kill the animal, a shoulder shot allowed for a subsequent shot to finish it off.

Personally, I've butchered three deer (whitetails), that were shot in the shoulder with 150 gr. bullets chambered in .308 Winchester. Two of the three were DRT, and the third one ran about 10 yds. before dropping. The amount of meat lost due to the gunshot was minimal - probably the size of the palm of your hand.

                    Good luck,

                    Dave

I like the SST for accuracy, but personally think they are on the fragile side. I shot a big boar in the neck with the 308 and 150 gr SST handloads. Dropped like a rock, and laid really still for about a minute. Then started getting up. Second one in the eye did the trick. The first one center hit the neck bone and didn't break it. Bullet just splattered. Distance was only about 45 yards. I now shoot 180 gr Sierra Game Kings in the pig rifle.

I will be using it on deer, sorry I forgot to mention that.

What twist rate you shooting. My 1/7 does not like 150's. 162-175's work the best. I have settled into 168 TTSX WITH H4895 behind them. Have fun working up your loads, there are so many combinations and if your like me, you will want to try them all!

They'll perform fine. I load a 155 grain vld behind 3031 for one of my .308's and it has put a lot of meat in the freezer. The SST seems to be a good bullet for deer.

I would do a ladder test with them and see how they group. Your barrel will tell you whether or not if it likes them. Varget is a good choice with the 308 Win
