    Budget long range rifle

Looking at trying to get a decent long range gun without dropping 3k+. Been saving up for a bit and still have a little ways to go. Looking for pointers, do's and don'ts, etc. I'm pretty well sold on the 700 sps tactical in 308. Still up in the air on the glass. Is there something better than the sps in that price range and caliber? This will end up suppressed so I've gotta factor that in. Already have plans for bedding and double checking the free float. I'd like to be able to reach out and touch out to 1k yards if needed. Most likely 500 will be normal, but would like to get out farther if needed. Trying to keep around 1500 or less with glass. I'm kinda figuring 700ish for the rifle and 500ish on optic

i would look at getting a rem 700 5r in 300 mag. They run about 1200 and shoot easy half moa out of the box. That leaves 800 for optics and you are still a grand under 3k.

Not sure if you've seen either of these or are open to options other than Remington:

When I unboxed the Predator, I found a skinny little tapered barrel, a light composite stock, and a surprisingly smooth action. I say surprising because there was really nothing remarkable about the rifle other than the action. Admittedly, I did not have high expectations for the predator. It is a deceptively modest gun. Can a rifle that retails for less than $500 makes hits at 1,000 yards?

My stock 700 XCR in .300 RUM topped with a vari x III will shoot a dime sized group at 100 and I have shot deer with it at 500 plus yards. I think I have around $1500 in the entire gun.

Would look at a 6.5 round. Easy on the shoulder. Great BC. Very Accurate. And will kill animals out to 800yds easy. Not sure on scope recommendation. But contact Arrowsmith on here for Vortex scopes. They make a decent glass for long range shooting.

What is long range? 300 yds? 500 yds? 1000 yds?

Rem M700 or Savage M10 flavor of your choice will work. The Ruger Precision rifle is getting great reviews but will run over $1K.

As far as glass goes you need good/repeatable tracking for shooting distance. Vortex, Bushnell, Leupold will have something in your budget.

I prefer solid mounting systems, something like Badger, Near, Murhpy Precision , Night Force bases and rings. I would suggest a 20 MOA rail also.

Skeeter, the OP listed 500 and 1000 yards so I would think that's the distances he will be shooting.

Long range varies among shooters. What is LR to one is not to another and vice versa.

Cajun Blake has a 700 in 7mm Rem Mag in the Classifieds right now that would fit your bill perfectly. 7mag is a LOT flatter shooting than the .308 too, and plenty good for 500-1,000 yard shots.

This is the question.....what most people consider long range isn't.

                      Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308
                      Magpul Hunter 700 Stock
                      SWFA 10x42 Scope
                      20 MOA scope base
                      Burris Xtreme Tactical rings

Upgrade the barrel, glass, and stock later on when you find a great deal or come into some extra moolah. Or...just shoot and have fun!

                        What is long range?

Remington 700 with a 1:10 twist in 308 with a Weaver 20MOA base, Weaver rings, SWFA or Primary Arms scope, leaves you enough for a good trigger and should shoot .5-.75 MOA out to 1,000 if you do your part.

Thats what I started with and it shot 5/8 moa out to 800 with facotry trigger, weaver base and rings, with PA scope, shooting 178 Hornady HPBT in Lapua brass over 4064 powder handloads. Then I upgraded to a good chassis and trigger and it's tighter than .5 MOA out to 1k when I am able to uphold my end of the deal.

Ps. This is with a 16.5" barrel.

I believe he said 500-1000 in his original post?

I've never played with one but every time budget glass for long range comes up the SWFA is mentioned. I need to get my hands on one.

This is pretty close to what I did. Bought it stock shot it a lot with the scope mentioned, i still shoot this scope and although it's not clear like my Zeiss hunting scope this wasn't meant to be a hunting rifle. scope tracks great and is fun to play with. I will upgrade the scope but it does just fine.I bought it used for under $200 same rings mentioned above and a warne 20moa base, Then a timney, then a b&c stock that was Bedded. Reloaded from day one with Sierra match kings and varget, gun shoots better than I can. That being said I should have started with a 5r action its way smoother. My brother and other shooting partner both shoot them. For a true custom such as changing Barrell later I'd wouldn't buy the sps the action just isn't buttery.
I bought the rifle and trigger new then added an extra 350-375 can't remember on stock I got off of here and scope that came from guntrader it's definitely a budget shooter and allows me to hang with anyone on the line out to the 600 yard mark at American shooting range
