2 steps forward 1 step back. The Devcon that I originally used did not cure properly so I removed it and used JB Weld instead. It cured perfectly. After it dried I continued on.

1.Pre drilled the 1/2" dowels with a 1/8" drill bit and cut the dowels to size. The lower one will contact the sling swivel so I had to shorten it a bit.

2.I measured the center line in the butt stock and drew a line. Then,I drilled 2 holes with a 1/2" drill bit for the dowels.

3.I mixed up the JB Weld, rolled the dowels in it,put some in the holes, and installed the dowels.I cleaned out the pre drilled holes for later.

4.Covered it all with JB Weld and it is now drying.

Recoil pad will be here tomorrow.

Finished the installation today.Looks good IMO but I did learn a few things that I might would do differently next time.

1.After the JB Weld completely dried I sanded the butt of the stock as square as I could and checked the fit of the recoil pad to it.

2.I made a pattern on paper of the hole location of the dowels and made appropriate holes in the recoil pad.I used a 1/8" drill bit.

3.Mixed up some more JB Weld, spread it on the pad and stock, and screwed the pad onto the stock.Secured the stock in a stable position and the JB Weld dry.

4.I taped the stock, going around it twice.Using 120 grit sandpaper I sanded down the pad pretty close to the stock and barely through the first layer of tape.I switched to 240 grit and sanded it a little closer.I sprayed a little WD-40 on the belt before using the 240 being careful not to go through the second layer of tape.

5.When it was really close I used a sanding block and 240 grit with WD-40 on it.

I put it all back together and will shoot it later this week.I weighed the gun that weighed 10lbs at the start of all this.It now weighs 12.5-13lbs and should be fairly easy to shoot as far as recoil goes.

Learnings-I have screw holes that I can see in the pad.I will try to cover these somehow.Next time I will probably just use the dowels and no screws to avoid the screw holes.I will also wait for the pad to arrive so I can use the holes already in the pad instead of making new ones.I will also maybe use 1/2 lb less of the shot. The gun is slightly heavier in the rear but not by much.Really no big deal on that.Easiest thing to do would be to try to buy a stock with the Pachmayr already on it.

Looks great buddy. You'll really enjoy shooting it too, and the extra half pound will reduce recoil even more.

I filled mine all the way to the top of the cavity with shot/epoxy mix so when I squared it up, I ended up with little shiny lead spots showing in the epoxy. So completely full. Mine isn't the heavy barrel....yet....so it comes out as a 10 pound rifle, give or take, and it's a dream to shoot as is in 300WSM. 180gr bullets are noticeably stiffer than the 150's, but still comfortable. When I get it rebarelled soon with a heavy barrel in a 6.5WSM I think the 140 class bullets should be really soft shooting, especially with the can on it. With yours tipping the scale at 13lbs, I'm betting mine comes in close to 15 with the can.

I plan on shooting it Thursday or Friday unless it rains again and I will be able to compare felt recoil and report back.Feels like it added more than 3lbs but that is what the scale says.Got some black rtv to lightly touch up the screw holes.

I had a thought. I guess it wouldn't be cheaper, but would a mercury recoil reducer be more effective than the lead?

I was thinking about putting in a mercury tube also.

Not sure.I already had the shot so I went with that.Looks like I added about 3lbs using it.Not sure what the Mercury weighs.I shot the gun yesterday and the added weight and better recoil pad made it very easy to shoot as far as recoil goes.

No problem.I left out the "grind to fit" pics because I couldn't grind and take pics at the same time.
