    Best 223 Ammo

What's the best 223 factory ammo out there? It's too cheap to waste my little to no-spare time on reloading.

I'm new to the 223 group.

    1) Bolt action Ruger American Predator will be used for learning, target practice, and on varmints by my son and nephews (ages 6-12)

    2) Ammo needs to be locally accessible

    3) Must perform as well as possible on the range as well as in the field

Thanks in advance for your input.

P.S.- I'm already agreeing a 22-250 would be a huge upgrade, but 223 is what we are working with here.

It all depends on what your barrel likes , no 2 guns are the same

That being said, white box Winchester has given me good results

Local to me in DFW, but I guess not you, but if you were willing to order online, you should check out Stand 1 Armory. Their stuff is good. I shoot both 55 and 75s out to 500 with no problems at all.

I use Winchester 45gr. JHP's and 40gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips out of my AR. Out of my bolt gun I like Hornady 52gr. BTHP's and 55gr. V-Max. My brother shoots 60 grain Hollowpoints.

The cheapest thing that goes bang somewhat accurately.

I could agree. And that would be?

I have good luck with the black box American Eagle 50 grain Varmint tip ammo....also right now PSA is running speer gold dot ammo for 9.99 a box in soft point. Haven't shot that ammo but heard good things and always had good luck with there stuff.

Blake pretty well nailed it. You won't know until you try several brands. Or, you may get lucky on the first or second try. I did with one, but not with another.

My Mini 14 likes Remington Core-lok 55 grain PSP. Killed deer and turkey at 100 - 120 yards clean. My gun obviously likes them.

I completely agree with you and Blake.

What I do not want to do is go buy 10-15 boxes of different 223 ammo to discover what many here at TBH has already discovered. I'll take all of the input and go buy a few different boxes and start from there.

Thanks to all for your input.

I have had great results with Federal Fusion loads. 62gr. The twist of your barrel is going to matter also. The heavy bullet will shoot better from a 1:7 or 1:8 twist bbl. The lighter bullets will perform better with the 1:9 bbl. There is a guy in the classifieds here that is selling a lot of Fusion rounds at a discounted price.

                      Good Luck.

Good comment. The twist on this is 1:8" in a 22" barrel.

You can find 55gr. V-Max just about anywhere so that's what I'd start out with. But if your gun shoots those good you could shoot 55 grain Hollowpoints or Softpoints or whatever and probably wouldn't be able to tell much difference as far as how it shoots.

I'd be thrilled if these shoot and perform well. That's a decent price.

Am Eagle 55gr FMJ is only $8

I have a Ruger American Ranch and I have been shooting Fiocchi 55 gr v max that can be bought from midway. 200 rds for $95 and come in a Plano case. They work for me.
