I've had good luck with Fiocchi 50gr. V-Max in the past except on one coyote I had to shoot 3 times to kill. The 2nd shot I hit it right square in the mouth and blew its teeth out on that side. I lost a coyote shooting the Federal 50gr. Varmint Tipped bullets after shooting it several times. A buddy of mine lost two back to back after shooting them with the same bullet. The rest I had got used up on prairie dogs.

I have a Ruger American 223 but I reload. This rifle has an 8 twist and I've found that mine likes 69 gr. Sierra Tipped Match king so, I'll bet that yours would like a heavy bullet also.

Shoot different brands from a rest and determine which shoots best from your gun.

We have had good luck with the winchester 45 gr jhp cheap readily available at every walmart I have been in and shoots well enough for our purposes, if we do our part we can keep it down around an inch. Haven't really had to try other brands since that was 1st and last brand we tried.

I bought the same rifle about a month ago and love it. I started with American Eagle (black box) 55 gr FMJ. (100 for $40 at Academy in Burleson) Once sighted in it held sub MOA consistently. I also did very well with Hornady 55 gr Spire Points.

I shot a squirrel at a measured 109 yards which for me now days is saying something about the rifle. I'm not as steady as I use to be.

I have some other rounds I plan to try through it later but for now I'm happy.

Pick a bullet you want to use. Personally I'd start out with 55gr. V-Max or even 55gr. FMJ to get it on paper because they're no good for huntin anyways. Once you get those FMJ's grouping at 100 yards I'd switch to the bullet you want to hunt with and shoot 3 rounds. If those 3 bullet holes are touching or shooting good enough to live up to how you think a gun should shoot....you're ready to hunt. That's exactly how I do it. If your gun is printing them all over the paper that's a sign to either shoot a lighter bullet or a heavier one. I wouldn't buy 40,45,50,55,60 and 62 grain bullets because your gun ain't gonna shoot every one of those good. Sight it in with the bullet you want to kill things with and call it good.

My gun loves the 53gr v-max Superformance load from Hornady.. It's nasty on smaller game also

Thanks and I mostly agree with you. (I was actually being sarcastic)

I do like FMJ when it's for a turkey. Less damage.

Good feedback. Thank you. My efforts here are to put together an ideal set-up for my nephews & son to learn/practice with before they advance to the world of larger centerfire rifles.

AND I'll enjoy the experience much more because when they are carelessly dropping and banging a rifle around, it's not one that I am overly sensitive about.

Oh.Lol Well I know that everyone has the bullet they like and are suggesting every which kind. And that's fine but it's pretty much personal preference. After a while that gets confusing because there is alot to choose from. They'll all work I suppose. I shoot bullets that stay inside of whatever I shoot and are less likely to ricochet into the next county. But my goal is to save pelts and obliterate small varmints so I use more frangible bullets unless I'm shooting at a hog.

Yes Sir. I'm with you on that.

I've ordered some 62gr and looking at some others to try. Want to stay above 55gr with this barrel and our expectations.

You are right on. There is so much to select from on the shelves and the prices can get so low that I have no interest in reloading 223.

I also know that these 3 boys are going to run 1,000s of rounds down this gun barrel.
