    !!!!Bonehead shotgun question!!!!

Ok, here we go, I recently got a mossberg 500 persuader, used and it came with about 150 rounds. After I got home I noticed that some of the boxes of ammo were 3.5" shells, and there were 4 shells missing. This shotgun is chambered for 2.75" and 3" shells. I called the guy and he said that he did shoot them and they wouldn't eject very well. He claims that he has shoot about 150 rounds of 2.75" through it since and everything is good. He had no idea he had shot the wrong shells.

My question is do y'all think the gun is ok or is it possibly damaged?
I will be calling Mossberg tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for your input.

In the correct chamber 3 1/2" is about 15% higher pressure than 3". In too small chamber probably way higher. Let us know what Mossberg says.

Yeah I'd like to have seen that

But that not withstanding. It's fine. Shotgun pressures are very low relative to centerline rifle/pistol. Might wear out something over a long period of time. But 4 shells, nah. That is just my own non scientific opinion of course.

Shotshell pressures seem to be a worrisome area for many shotgunners, especially reloaders.  They worry that if they shoot excessive pressure loads that their shotgun could well “blow up.” They’ve heard that from their buddies, but they really don’t have any solid scientific evidence to support those assertions.

I can't believe he managed to get them in there. I think it's probably okay but I'd definitely check. If it wasn't okay I think that guy would have found out pretty quick like. That's pretty scary.

They 3.5" will not cycle but will drop in the chamber no problem if you assist them in there. I had to try it for myself.

                Thanks for the link TexMax!

Are you saying you got a shell in the chamber with the bolt closed?

I would have bet that the action would not close on a 3.5" shell in a 3" chamber.

Good to know in case someone wants to bet in the future and take my money

Yes, locks up tight without forcing it!
I even took the barrel off and dropped the 3.5" shell in the chamber and it drops all the way in.

The chamber is the measurement of a FIRED shell not an unfired one. The rub comes in after the hull opens. Bet he shot the ends ragged on those 3.5 hulls because they sure as hell didn't open properly.

It's fine. Trust me, I did the same mistake when I first got my shotgun.
