Blake ..... ..... never heard of him

    buy a used Remington 700 for $425 .... sell stock for $50

send to PacNor and for $600 they will true your action and install a super match grade barrel in caliber of choice (APR offers this same service , no clue on price)

buy a used HS Precision stock for $225 and drop in your new barreled action

    investment around $1250

Ballistic wise the 270 beats many calibers at the longer range game. Often over looked which is error on many. The 300wsm is also a good caliber many choose and is about same as a 300wm which many have choose. Maybe up grade your set ups and use what u have.

6.5 or look at a 257 weatherby, that is a flat shooting round.

The 270's downfall is lack of high B.C. bullet selection.

I have not shot my Ruger SS in a while, but it is a very good round and agree with the "flat" shooting. Even with my blasted shoulder, it's not too punishing. Besides, great looking rifle and I personally like the Ruger action.

One more thing on the 25-06:

My round of choice is the Hornady, 117 gr SST Superperformance. Ballistics @500 yards is still 1989fps/1028energy. But, @500 yards you get -38". I don't know how that compares with some of the other calibers mentioned? I just have my own ballistic notes on all the calibers me and the son's have. Cost per box is $40-$45, at least last time I bought any and it's been a while.

Dont mean to hi-jack, but if a guy wanted to do this for a .260 Rem would you have to start with a Remington 700 of the exact caliber or would any short action work. custom/ semi custom rifles are completely foreign to me

Any short action receiver will work, but if you don't want to buy a new bolt make sure the bolt face diameter is .470 +/-. Calibers with that diameter:

                                225 Winchester
                                22/250 Remington
                                6mm Norma BR
                                243 Winchester
