    Scope recommendation for .17 HMR

Got about $400 to spend. Plan on shooting varmints, maybe ear hole the occasional hog. Daytime and nighttime hunting. Want at least 3x9 magnification.
Can't make up my mind on the illuminated reticle. I've hunted at night without one just fine so far. If it means getting better glass w/o the illumination I'll go for that.

Saw a good deal on the Vortex HS 4x16x50 for $399.99. But I think it's just a little overkill for this rifle.

This is my first rimfire I'm setting up to hunt with. (Of course I have .22's but they're just for plinking).

I have a BSA Sweet .17 on mine. Never had any trouble with it.

Wow BSA huh? Never owned one. Just assumed they were cheap. Y'all have good record of them holding zero? They focus well? Decent clarity at least?

First BSA product for me to own as well. Yes they hold a zero well, and mine has come back down to zero when making adjustments on the elevation turret. By this I mean I sighted in for 100, set my turret, dialed it to 175 and shot, then dialed back down to 100 and was still dead on. Very clear, however I haven't shot mine around dark-time.

I have a 4-12x40 leupold vx2 AO on my 77/17. It's pretty good. Shot a lot at night. I may eventually upgrade but it has served me very well.

I've had mine for around 12 years. Killed lots of varmints with it over the years. The only time I ever lost zero was my own fault. I messed with the turrets when I was younger thinking I knew what I was doing....I didn't.

I have a BSA Sweet 17 6-18x and I've never had a problem with it. I've dialed it to 200yds several times and shot it and dialed it back down to zero and it's never given me an issue.

Thinking about the BSA 3-12x40 with the "etched" illuminated reticle. Did a little reading on them, and lots of positive reviews. And for that cheap, I might as well try it. Anyone of you with a BSA ever use the illuminated version of the sweet 17 series?

I have the 3-12x40 but not the etched illuminated reticle.
