McMillan stock comparisons with pics and specs

I've owned quite a few McM stocks since 1985 when I first ventured into custom rifles. Early on, there were 3 models that were best suited for a hunting rifle: HTG , BDL, and Winchester Marksman. Kelly McMillan and Richard Davis listened to the consumers and introduced new stock models over the years.

Pictured below are just a few to help people make a choice if considering a McM.

Top: McMillan Hunter that is a copy of the Sako 75 Varmint yet inletted for a R700. 75% dark green , 25% white swirl. Palm swell, and Flat bottom to ride a sand bag well and feels great in the hand when shooting. With raised monte carlo and pronounced cheek piece, it has perfect position for cheek when viewing through 30mm or larger objective scopes. At from sling swivel stud area, stock measures 1.900" wide , and is 10 5/8" long from recoil lug to end of stock. Rifle is chambered in 17 Little Nasty

Middle: HTG with adjustable cheek piece. 70% OD green , 15% blacl, and 15% tan swirl. Slight palm swell, and not quite as wide flat bottom (1.765" at sling swivel stud) . Points well with the narrower forend that is more rounded than other 2 stocks. Monte carlo type stock with no cheek piece, can be ordered normal or adjustable. Stock measures 10 5/8" long from recoil lug to end of stock. Chambered in 300/221

Bottom: Remington Varminter black pebble paint textured finish. More of a compact stock that measures 1.965" at sling swivel stud, and is 9 3/4" from recoil lug to end of stock. Palm swell with wide forend , as stock feels very good. Would be ideal for a 22" or shorter barrel.

My favorite is the McMillan Hunter (top dark green stock)

Do the Hunter and the Varminter have similarly shaped fore ends? I realize that the Varminter is shorter, but is the crosswise profile similar?

I have an OLD M40A1 stock I want to have built up. It's a decommissioned stock and saw live action. I have the stock, trigger guard and floor plate all matching numbers. Just need the funds to one day have a rifle built to fit the stock.

Bought it YEARS ago when they pulled the stocks off their current m40 rifles and replaced them with the A3 stocks.

Yes both are flat (width) and would be perfect for a sendero/pipeline box blind shooting rifle

Thanks. I did/do like the Hunter stock, but going by the pics on their website, I didn't think it had that kind of fore end.
            Thanks again, CB.

The Remington Hunter is my favorite hunting stock that they make. I do need to snag an HTG too. What's that rifle? It's a short action something. Threaded. 308? Lol

Hey guys how well do y'all like the Game Scout? Or how does it compare to the HTG? I am going to start a build and need to find a stock. I really like the Manners EH1 but not interested in waiting 6 months.

McM wait is 5 months , possibly longer depending on stock design

I've always told people if you're gonna build a $1500-2000+ custom rifle , buy what you truly want regardless of wait time

never handled a Game Scout ... the EH1 is the real deal especially in the carbon fiber finish

I'm working with Tom Manners right now on a new stock design that will likely be announced at SHOT. Since I'm consulting on the project, I'm not at liberty to discuss details. Prototype looks very promising.

edit... EH1 pic in midnight camo

I was tired . It looks good.

The game scout is a good mix between tactical and hunting. Nice stock. I have an EH1. Manners just lacks in the cheek rest. McMillan fits me better.
McMillan has the game scout in certain patterns ready to be inletted and only take 4-6 weeks. Only a few choices though. The rest are being quoted 4 months but you know how that goes

And now you have my attention on the new stock Blake lol

I have 2 Game Scouts I like them a lot. But if you going larger than a 50 mm objective I would get the adjustable cheek rest.

Great pics CB, I'm really liking that McM Hunter and could see that for my next build.
