    Long range scopes

    Hi ya'll,

I'm fairly new to long range shooting. Not shooting itself but I've been bit by the long range bug. I am working on getting a 1000 yard rifle set up and it's time to take the plunge and get some good optics. Does anyone have any suggestions? My big thing is I want it to track true. I would like 6-24 power for my gun I am currently working on. Its a Remington 700 VLS in 260 Remington. I've been told this was a rare combo to snag. I have an old pre bushnell millett 6-24 that I got for cheap but I want something I can trust and has good optics. I've been looking at the Vortex Viper HS-T as I would like to keep it under $1000 as I also need another scope for my 257 weatherby. I would like a target style turret for both but I was thinking more of a 3-15 for my 257 as it is more of a hunting gun. I would welcome any advice or suggestions anyone might have!

Thanks in advance for the help!
    Glen

Spend a little more and get a used Nightforce. I have a few Leupold mark 4's on some long range builds and love them as well, but Nightforce is the prefered choice for me.

What kind of turrets does the SHV night force have? I have read a little about them but just see they are capped. I was hoping for exposed turrests.

Been watching ebay but nothing much has come up. I'll check out the long range hunting site!

I really like the nightorce but that's still another $500 or better than a brand new Viper HS-t. I can get one from optics planet for $639. Is there really that much noticeable difference? I know clarity is going to be better out of the nightforce but what about turret tracking?

          Thanks!

I had the Vortex HST and it was adequate for out to 5-600 yds. My main complaint is the reticle sub tensions are 2 MOA so it lacks some precision if you are trying to hold in 1/2 Minutes. If you are keeping it under 1k my money would go towards a Nightforce SHV 4-16x56mm. This scope will do anything you need it to do and will last forever.

I like my 6.5-20 Mark 4 on my 6.5 I have a SHV also but it's the 4-16 very clear. I also have had or still have a few Vortex they are great for the money but I would try my best to go look at several and pick what you like the best.

Cajun Blake had a really nice Burris for sale not to long ago I head that version is supposed to be very top end like NF

                thanks brother

this scope is the real deal and excellent LR glass priced at $975 (retails for $1200)

comparable NF optics sell for $1500 plus

can send actual pics if interested as its still NIB in plastic wrapper

There is no comparison between a NF and a Vortex Viper of any flavor. The NF is by far the better, more rugged, more repeatable scope. And you will need that with a 260, you will be dialing a lot. A Leupold Mark 4 will be superior to a Viper as well.

Others have given you good options, but my advice is whatever scope you get, get a first focal plane scope that has matching reticle with turret adjustments. If you prefer MOA, get a reticle that increments in MOA...if you get mil dot reticle, make sure turret adjustments are in mils. If you're new, and don't have any established habits, I'd get something in a mil/mil over MOA/MOA. Much like the metric system in general, it makes far more sense if you learn it first. It's my understanding that our U.S. military snipers have converted to metric mils.

Sounds like I'll be saving a little more and looking for a NF. I definitely don't want to get the viper then wish I would have saved a little more and got a NF instead. Is the NF SHV a good scope for the money?

How about the bushnell elite tactical line? I have seen several of those used on ebay for pretty good priced...

Cajun Blake can you pm me about your scope? I don't have enough posts to view it in the classifieds yet...

Thanks for all of the help guys!

Blake's scope is ideal! Mil/Mil, first focal plane, 34mm, 5-25, and great price.

That Burris Blake has is a helluva scope for the price he is asking!

I've never shot long range with a bushnell, but they don't seem to stack up too bad at all for the price. If you look at the other scopes they beat out in this test its pretty mu h mind blowing. http://precisionrifleblog.com/2014/0...sults-summary/
I'm sure another test will be done this year with the popularity of last years. The vortex hd gen 2 will be included this time I'm sure also.
