Wanting to get a Long Range Rifle

I have been toying around with the idea of getting a long range rifle to play around with and maybe one day get to hunt out west. I have a Remington 700 7Rem Mag, Remington 798 243, and a Parker Hale .270 but I want something made for some distance.

I have came across a used Remington 700 5R 300 WM. Like new condition. HS Precision Stock, Fluted 5R heavy barrel, threaded with muzzlebrake. Stock trigger, scope base for $799.

I also came across a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308 heavy barrel. From what I can tell, all stock with a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 scope on it for $699 in fairly good condition.

Which would make me a better long range rifle. I know the 300WM has a lot better ballistic but I know ammo & recoil will be more costly

Either cartridge is great as far as accuracy for paper downrange.

The .308 will make you a better shooter. Not going to get proficient at trigger control, breathing, etc getting pounded all day by the three hundo.

I would use the 300 and put a good brake on it ! I shoot the 7 STW for my long range toy.

The 5R hands down and the fact that it's a 300 wm will give better down ranger performance.

300WM in my opinion out of the two. I like heavy .284 bullets though.

              ??? YOU HAVE A 7 MAG!!!????

That IS a long range round lol... 1000 yard gun easy if it is a quality rifle...

What is your idea of long range? What do you think you will realistically shoot? You shooting steel comps? or F-class? or just goofing off? Or really looking to hunt with it?

If your gona shoot 800+ regularly then I would go 300

if your gona shoot 400-600... then just go 308 and save some ammo money...

that said they will both go to 1k if you do your job...

300 hands down unless you by long range you mean 300 yards. Snipers used the 300 Winmag before they found the 338 Lapua. Recoil isn't that bad at all unless you are very sensitive.

and 308 is probably the most commonly shot 1k gun on the planet...
.... please do more research than this guy is suggesting... please please please

the round is a great one... but it isnt the end all be all, and it isnt so much better than everything else there is a lot to consider...

if your married to those two rifles then we really need to know intended range and use...

I still want to hear why the 7 mag isnt up to snuff....

for the record, snipers used 308 until they moved to 300... oh WAIT, THEY STILL USE .308 TOO!

.308 pretty much sucks for 1000. Tons of better calibers out there.

Everything as in life is a trade off. .300win mag is great, but at the cost of a lot more recoil and significant barrel life when compared to the .308 so if you like to shoot a lot, that is a consideration. If you are hand loading as you should be for long range, cost of ammo shouldn't be a considerable difference.

Of the 2 you mention the 300 sounds like the better rifle.

However I have been playing with a 308 for the last few months and will say that far more fun to shoot a lot and considerably less expensive to load for.

My suggestion is get the 308 planning to upgrade the stock on day 1 and then when you feel proficient to hunt past 600 yards add a 300 to your collection.

I know the 7 Rem Mag would be plenty enough rifle for me & ballistically seems to compare well to the 300WM in the same bullet weight. My 7 Rem mag is my go to hunting gun, and I would want something different set up for long range
