The Rem 700 in 7mm mag you have is a long range rifle. Just make sure the barrel is floated from the stock. It will save you some money also.

I have came across a used Remington 700 5R 300 WM. Like new condition. HS Precision Stock, Fluted 5R heavy barrel, threaded with muzzlebrake. Stock trigger, scope base for $799.
I also came across a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308 heavy barrel. From what I can tell, all stock with a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 scope on it for $699 in fairly good condition.
Which would make me a better long range rifle. I know the 300WM has a lot better ballistic but I know ammo & recoil will be more costly
You already own one.

Now is a great time to get into long range shooting and God bless Ruger for making it more affordable. If I was just starting, I would pick up the brand new Ruger Precision Rifle. I think they retail for $1300, but the street price is closer to $1000. Available in .243, 6.5 Creedmore, and .308 which will all get you out to 1000 yards. One of the great features of the rifle is its ability to accept multiple different mag types.
I've always looked at 308 as "paying your dues." Ballistically it is inferior to the other rounds, but will provide longer barrel life and offer more "learning opportunities." It's kind of like learning to drive a manual transmission before switching to high speed paddle shifters.
But for instant gratification, you can't go wrong with the 6.5 Creedmore. Hornady is making great match grade ammo for about $1.25 a round. You will extend your range over the 308 at he cost of a shorter barrel life. I know that there are already after market companies working on barrels (including a few more calibers) for these rifles.
I would avoid the .243 because of the extremely short barrel life and lack of cheap match grade ammo.

You can get a Savage Long Range Hunter for less and it will likely out shoot it outta the box.

Savage isn't magazine fed, no LOP adjustability, no night vision capability, no ability to change grips. I'm not a huge Ruger fan, but I think it's a hell of a deal at that price. Snipershide.com has a video of it up against an AI AXMC. I love my AXMC, but you could have 90% of the capability for 1/7 of the cost.

Don't need to change grips, don't need to change the LOP, don't know why you need night vision on that rifle or how the rifle dictates that. And it'll still cost less and out shoot it out of the box. It does have an adjustable comb.
Or there is the Remington 700 Long Range in 7 or 300 mag. You can start out at about $740 including tax and swap up/build from there. What I did.

This Rifle is also offered in 6.5X284 Norma
