    HIGH END glass question

Who has spent any time behind a Schmidt and bender, US optics, hensoldt etc price ranged scope? Is it worth the extra coin? Trying to decide if I want to spend the money or or just go with a nightforce NXS. This is the specs on the rig it will go on.

    .300 win mag
    KRG whiskey 3 chasis
    Big horn T2 action
    Jewell trigger
Kreiger MTU contour 8-twist barrel at 28 inches

I have 2k 210 grain berger vld's along with enough H1000, norma brass and federal 215 primers to shoot them. IF the barrel lasts that long.

I will play with this gun out to a mile even though its going to take me a LOT of practice to get out that far.

My degenerate glass buddy, he used to swear by SB's but he has changed his tune recently. He said they are the "best" but the point of diminishing returns happens about a thousand plus dollars before you get to the SB's.

Here you go... everything you ever wanted to know about "HIGH END" glass... It is a good read and may help. These guys also have 2 other scope reviews you can read too that are good. use the drop downs at the top of the page...

This is the executive summary and overall scores from an epic scope field test focused on long-range, tactical rifle scopes in the $1,500+ price range. This represents an unprecedented, data-driven approach to evaluating the best scopes money can buy. Over 400 hours have gone into this research, and the line-up and tests are built on ...

This might change your mind about "just getting a NightForce...

For the money, I think the Leupold Mark 4 is very hard to beat. Excellent glass, excellent warranty and made in the U.S.

Know a lot of people agree with you but to me the mark 4 is horrible when compared to others in the same price range.

Seems like with the exception of the nightforce atacr and Bushnell it follows the price line pretty well.

                I love my Leupold Mark 6 3x18. A little cheaper than a S&B

I own a S&B PMII 3-20, and that was an upgrade from the Nightforce NXS. The difference in glass quality is the first thing I noticed right from the start. After shooting it a while, the tracking ability of the S&B was far superior. On a paper test of the elevation turret, I couldn't draw a line as straight as it would track, and the holes were spaced so perfectly I couldn't ask for anything better. The NXS was good enough at all of these things, but not perfect at any of them. At 1mile it makes a difference, but it it worth double...was to me. All that being said the new Swarovski X5 looks promising (coming out in Sept), and the Khales 624I is very comparable to the S&B mechanically at a cheaper price.

Sources to support? For the money, it's a high end glass with FFP...NF NXS is higher dollar for SFP. Just curious about what you are basing your opinions on.

I am basing my opinion on using one and not liking it. Optics are sub par compared to several others in that price range, not a big fan of the reticle choices, did not care for how the turrets felt etc. It just wasn't for me. It's a shame too cuz I wanted to like it.

In that 1500 range I perfer the swfa super sniper, Bushnell elite tactical and nightforce over the leupold mark 4.

But that really isn't my question here. Trying to decide if a schmidt and bender is worth the extra coin over those others I just mentioned.

My swfa is the most expensive scope I have had then my leupold vx-1 3-9x40 would be my second most expensive. I am just a poorboy though.

I saw that rifle in the shop the other day. What a beast! Hope you aren't planning to pack it around much, lol.

Anyway, the highest glass I own is a Swarovski and it's fantastic. But it's a hunting scope and probably not well suited for dialing turrets a lot.

With glass, IMO much over $1k gets you to a point of diminishing return. You can spend a whole lotta extra money for minor gains. I'm sure S&B, USO and scopes of tat ilk are as good as it gets but I can't say whether they are that much better.

Ironically I've been perfectly happy with all of my Mk4 scopes, even though I own several with better glass. I'm not out there depending on them to save my life or anyone else's so I can't justify the extra cost of the others.

Hell if someone can make a 2 mile shot with a Vortex, how much more do you really need?

not worth the extra coin in my opinion. I don't care for the Mark 4's either. I have a Burris scope that is just as clear as a friends Mark 4.

I like my ATACR though. You will need the extra MOA's offered from the 34mm tube to get to a mile I believe or go with a 40moa base.
