A 1-4x is my preference, but they're mostly out of the "cheap" range.

Good choices here great advice. I'm checking all them out. I'm also looking for a good sight for my ar. Something good for tactical shooting. Any suggestions on that would be welcome as well.

Mtac 1-4. Does everything a red dot does and then some, better.

Aimpoint is the only way to go in my opinion.

My preference is the T2. You can get one including the mount from LaRue tactical for $768 I think.

If you're on a budget the Aimpoint PRO is simply amazing.

Here's one for $424 (including mount)

I've got an old Comp M2 that I'm rocking right now until I get the T2.

The T1 is an excellent optic but I sold it to eventually get the upgraded T2.

The reason for Aimpoint is they don't break. These sights are incredibly rigid and pretty much bomb proof. They're fast on target good to 300+ meters and the battery life is insane. I think the T2 has a battery life of 50,000 hours. Yes. That's FIFTY THOUSAND.

If anyone is interested in the differences between the T1 and T2, this video explains it pretty well.

You should be able to hit a squirrel easily at 40 yards with one. I shot an easily killed an oryx with my suppressed 30-30 with a trijicon RMR on top.... zero magnafication, at 160 yards.

They dont need to gather light. Its like looking through a pair of glasses. Turn the brightness of the dot down so it doesnt drowned everything out and youre good to go.

Red dots are an excellent choic for fast target aquisition. I have an aimpoint t1 on my 10.5" 5.56 and can easily shoot 300 yards with it. Id hunt with it inside 200 for sure. Throw a pvs 14 behind it and it makes for a good time.

Some folks dont care for red dots, some dont care for scopes.... everyone has their opinion.
I've shot 8"plates at 300 with a red dot. Irons or a scope are the way to go for anything past 200. It's difficult to differentiate between the dot and the red dirt that is prevalent around here. How do you even see a squirrel at 160 yards?
