    Building a model 700??

Well I have built 2 ARs and have been wanting to build a bolt action 700. But I have noticed the receivers on brownells are expensive.. Is it better to buy a rifle and just replace the parts etc? Or is there a better place to buy parts? Looking for a good rifle but not a bench rifle necessarily. Any info on a 700 build and pointers would be appreciated. I'm clueless when it comes to 700

You can buy a full rifle from walmart for under 400 bucks right now. Then sell everything but the receiver. That's my plan at least.

Buy a used action on Gunbroker or some other sight. I would recommend getting with Cajun Blake. He helped me get mine built and it is a tack driver.

Whats your budget and what are you trying to accomplish with the build?

I guess that's the cheapest way? How come the receivers and such ain't affordable to buy separate?

Well budget maybe 800 or so, but to be honest I don't need it just looking to build one for a project. As far as what to accomplish.. I want a accurate rifle for deer hunting but doesn't nessasarilly have to be a paper perfect gun.

Thinking of a .243 maybe. Something for my kids one day, cause I already have my bigger calibers I want already.

Rem 700 rifle (donor action) from pawn shop, inet classifieds, gun show, or wherever you can find one.... ballpark price $400

                    SS custom barrel ... $350
                    thread, chamber, crown ... $250
used HS take off stock ... $225
                    skim bed ... $100
                    Timney trigger ... $125

$1500 is what you will spend on average. Some GS's are proud of their work and will charge quite a bit more.

you can save a few $$ by adjusting factory trigger (older model) , or using the factory supplied wood stock.

                    accuracy ain't cheap

You can build a nice savage for that budget with a prethreaded custom barrel, but its gonna be hard to build a 700 properly for those numbers. The bare action will run $350 plus $500 for a chambered , threaded and crowned custom barrel. In order to really do it right the action should be trued this will run another $300. You would still need a stock and a scope.

Academy or Walmart is your best best on a 700 for under 400. Sell the factory barrel and stock and recoup a little $. That's what I did at least. Buy the parts as you can afford them, then assemble the rifle you really want.

To really do a Remington 700 right requires a lathe. If you don't have access to one or don't know how to use one, then pay a gunsmith to do it, or do a Savage, which is easily rebarreled with hand tools.

For that goal why not just buy an older 700 and have it bedded and floated?
