I've killed one deer with them out of my 7-08 encore pistol and she was shoulder shot and didn't take a step. Personally I wouldn't be scared to drill any deer in the woods with that bullet. Having said all that and if I still gun hunted I'd have to look close at the triple shocks. I've been very impressed with the kills my little boy has had with the triple shocks in his 223.
Thanx cwill, hope you and yours are doing good. Thanx for the info. I built myself a rifle and been trying to match a bullet to it. The Silvertips are very accurate and thats premium in my book. I figure if they were not any good then they would not have been around this long. Thanx

which is why i wonder why people waste so much neck meat to cut out the coagulation

Well, I got almost all the way through all these posts before I realized (I know i'm slow) folks are using BT for Balistic Tip not Boat Tail. Couldn't figure why people were saying the jackets were too fragile on BT (Boat Tail).

OK, I think I am current now.

Been loading for about 40 years. Shoot more reloads than factory. My opinion, as I believe the majority here have expressed, is accuracy / shot placement is foremost, followed by "bullet performance" aka expansion.

Bullet performance should be evaluated by game animal. "Target" bullets are typically hollow point, thin jacket bullets and designed for accuracy only. (Go bear hunting with them and figure on getting eaten) Light bullets for thin skinned lighter animals. Full metal jacket only for dangerous game at close range (elephant, cape buffalo etc) large bore, accuracy and penetration of thick hide and heavy bone is EXTREMELY important. Then we get to velocity and jacket thickness as related to "performance." My experience tells me partition bullets expand well (depositing energy) and stay together (penetration).

Decide what you are going to hunt. Where you are going to hunt (ranges). Sight your gun in for that distance. Don't take marginal shots (ethical kills).

And I think that is the reason for the original question. Will Winchester Silver Tip, 140 gr make a clean kill in 7-08.

So, my opinion is: You do your job, the bullet will do its job. (But then, my friends accuse me of going into the woods with "overkill.")

Best of luck, and happy hunting.
