smallest caliber to kill deer

Smallest I ever used was a .17 Remington. Neck shot. The pool of blood was quite shocking.

I've killed (culled) does inside 50 yards, in good conditions, with a .22mag under the ear. It's a tough shot, but if you miss, you usually miss clean.

That said, .22-250 or a .223 would be the smallest caliber I'd recommend.

Why would you even post this? .22 mag is an illegal round on deer.

I'm not saying it's not effective. I'm sure it is. But really?

Since you said "not ear hole them"... Personally, a .243 is the smallest I'd use on a deer with a shot to the chest.

My first few were killed about 40 years ago with a .222 to the neck.

Get a 270 Win. Nobody ever says anything negative about it if you'll notice. It's my go to caliber when I do rifle hunt.

Didn't quite expect the number of .22 shooters. Personally, 243, 270 and 30-06 is all I have ever killed dear with. Can't go wrong with 270

I just got my Remington 30-06 from the gunsmith so I'm pretty sure it will become my go to hunting rifle!
