M16, what are the benefits of the Skinners? I'm iron sight ignorant; this is my first iron sighted rifle.
I think that answers your question, at least to me. get a low power scope with good light pick up and stay with what you know.

I've had a 30-30 for years and it goes back and forth between having the 3x9 on it and not. depends on throw down (thrown on the back seat and run to another area or lay it down and run to another area)

I have a 4x leupold scout scope and XS mount on my 450. I've only shot the gun a few times, but it works well and points quick.

Post and crosshair is a great low-light scope setup. When I was in the accuracy work-up business, I had a customer bring in one of these with a Leupold 2-7 on it. Said he wanted a "ham slammer" load. So, I did some research and found a load that would produce the desired result and stay within the pressure limitations of the rifle. This gun takes higher pressures than the old trapdoor Springfields, but not as high as the Browning/Ruger single shot actions. At any rate, with a 300-gr Berger open point (not a tiny hollow point) at about 2300 fps as I recall, it quickly acquired its name--Ham Slammer.

If I was going on a bear hunt I would throw a 1-4 scope on it. Still great acquisition speeds for the close shots/brush yet you still have some magnification just in case you have to stretch her legs a bit for a 200 yard shot. My brother did the same thing with a little single shot .45-70 he got off a guy on here and it was awesome when I borrowed it for a pig hunt . Was great for those running shots as well as those more precise shots out a little ways.

As drawn as I am, to optics, I'm going to leave this one as is.
The more I look at it, the more I like the classic styling.

This will be a 50 yard shot, max.
I confident I can pull that off with the iron sights.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

                      Ya got me preacherman!

                      Foiled by my own post.....

                      I stand corrected Mark.

It must have been an off day for Lucas if he actually had to take a bead on a bad fella.
