To scope or not to scope?

I picked up this marlin 45-70 today and got to shoot it. I originally planned to put a low power scope on it as it will not likely see any action past 100. After handling it and seeing it in person, I'm thinking that I'll put a narrow leather sling on it and ditch the scope idea, and keep it classic looking.

What do the masses have to say?

Id run a 1-4x with a QD ring set and do both

I put a set of Skinner receiver sights on it.

        Matt, what kind o's 1-4?

M16, what are the benefits of the Skinners? I'm iron sight ignorant; this is my first iron sighted rifle.

Kevin, I would put a 3x9 on it with a set of Kwik-site see thru rings so you can still use your iron sights.

I got a leupold VXR 1.25-4x with the fire dot reticle to run on my 30-30. I think it is a good mix. As for the open sights, i added the XS sight systems rail and ghost ring sights. The peep is pretty big, but we didnt have much trouble hitting a 6" plate at 100 without sighting it in and just messing around. I have yet to put it on paper and see how accurate they really are. But, with that said, when i mean business, and plan to kill some stuff, the scope will be on it. Day or night. The sight system was really just for looks and.... well.... 'Merica LOL

I like. And I'd keep it clean, should be easy shooting iron shots inside 100.

And yours is identical to my 30-30 except the caliber.

I guess I'm more concerned about the gun looking goofy with a scope.

I would opt for a good receiver sight like the Skinner. I have a Lyman receiver sight on mine, but am thinking of changing it out to a skinner.

Kevin, I'd either mount a low power (older) scope with a post as opposed to a crosshair, or leave as is. Although I might be tempted to put a peep sight on the rear

I have skinners on my 44 and 357 carbine levers. I prefer the choice of ghost ring or smaller apeture peep sights. No apeture for walking or apeture when in a stand

                          3 x 9 if it was mine..

Id leave it alone if it was mine. Just my opinion but a scope on that rifle would take away from the classic looking lever gun.
I cant stand a scope on a lever gun, but that is just me

I hit the gong open sights at 300 yards with my 44 mag... dont need a scope for hog sticks
