I agree with the post about buying a used .38/.357 wheelgun. Not because the Hipoint is a crappy weapon. But because the first thing you typed was "I'm not a pistol person". I would readily shoot a dog in defense with my Buckmark in .22lr but I have shot dogs, hogs, coyotes and small game with my pistols for a long time. A six shot wheel gun can be loaded with the first shot as rat shot and that will deter most aggressive dogs and people. Experience has shown me though it at least rolls them around a little and gives you more time to line up the second shot. If they shake that off and keep coming a well constructed self defense round will easily do the rest. No jams to consider, no light firing pin strikes, no stove pipes because it laid around getting too dusty and dry to cycle correctly. No one ever talks about a ftf on a wheel gun.

A used wheelgun is a great suggestion, Screamin! Especially for someone who "isn't a pistol person".

I'll also second the SCCY because they make a decent gun and have a similar warranty to Hi-Point.

As to quality, Hi-Point is better than you think. For ****s and giggles I've run a pistol course with a HP and had zero problems. They aren't pretty and they are heavy as heck but they do what they are designed to.

Or, if I was an advertising exec I'd say they have looks that keep thieves from wanting them and they have enough heft to pistol whip someone with.

Stick to HP, SCCY, or a quality used wheelgun and you'll be happy.

Good Morning Everyone and I hope everyone had a good "Father's Day". I'd like to thank everyone for the feedback on the Pistol.

I do have 20+ years of military experience and sometimes "Close Quarters" with a 9mm but I'm just not a pistol person ... I'd rather have a long gun. But yesterday's situation on the front yard with a stray Pit Bull ... My wife & I saw the need for something we can get quick ...
            I like the quick reloading of a pistol .. So 9mm Hi-Point her I come ...

Like every weapon, and you above all know this, just keep it clean and maintained. As a side note: there is a very popular gun shop in my area that can't keep them in stock, prices are probably the main reason, a lot of negative comments one hear's IMO are from those who have no "hand's on experience" with this brand and judge on comments from others that have heard comments...so on, so on.

Not saying they NEVER malfunction, but a "dirty" weapon no matter what brand will have problems eventually too. IMO, the main reason for misfires, jamming. The ONLY drawback for me is the molded pic rail is "thinner" than a standard rail so if you mount a light or laser you either need the Hi-Point manufactured mount or a base/ring that can reduce down to fit. Once she get's the practice in and is comfortable I would bet she will have no problem. Good luck!

I have a green one in 40 cal and it goes pow every time I squeeze the trigger.
Accurate. But, it is very heavy. I use it as my camp carry.

I use to have a 38/357 Mag and trained her to shoot.. Shot Groups in the groin area of the target ... Lol
I'll take her to the range once it arrives and we'll both get familiar with it. I hear what your saying about cleanliness as dirty weapoons of any type will malfunction ...
Scariest Range I was ever responsible for was teaching a bunch of Doc's & Nurses how to shoot. The ones that never held a gun .. I had a Range Safety by their side.

Heavy, ugly, cheaply made, inexpensive to buy...will shoot everytime, and will be reliable.

My experience from the one I have! Its my beach/tacklebox gun

I have no experience with them. I know a couple guys who bought then and sold them after shooting a few better quality pistols.

I don't buy cheap bows or arrows. I won't buy cheap pistols either.
