pics or it didn't happen... So if my memory serves you have a Ruger #1 in 257wby and 257 Roberts AI? Please post pics of both!!!! Gun ****
My wby is a Rem 700 build with a SS, fluted, 3 groove Lilga bbl. The #1 is in pieces...bbl is back from Pacnor but needs the 1/4 rib attatched then get blued. My smith is about as slow as I am getting taxidermy done, but it's good when I get it so I wait patiently. I'll take pics of the wby this week for ya.
I love my .257 wby but my current build is a Ruger #1 in .257 rob AI just cuz.... I too like the stuff bout a 1/2 step left of "conventional".
I've been shopping for a Ruger International in a No.1 for a few weeks now. Ruger JUST got this years production line to the shelf. It's a 257 Rob. I wanted something big and unique in mine, and to do it that way I'm probably going to get custom wood, unless of course I walk into a gun store that has one of those .257's on the shelf
I'm looking at slapping custom wood on a 30-40 Krag or a 9,3x74 to make a mannlicher no. 1. I guess you could call that unconventional
Don't forget the .257 STW! More "odd" than the 257 Roy and a great round. I shoot Weatherbys from .224 to .460. The .460 is a tad overkill for whitetails etc., but .240 and .257 are great choices.
NO such thing as "too dead", but you can dang sure have "not dead enough"!!! Just sayin'.......

My sacrificial #1 came off Gunbroker. I bought a 98% 1B in 7mm rem mag for $550. A new bbl and extractor and I'm good to go!

Yep! At that price, I'd rebarrel and get custom wood. At 800, I'd want the caliber I want, and then get the wood put on it.
There's a 45-70 barreled action on GB now for only 6... But I like my shoulder
Now if you are a 6.5mm fan (as am I) and you really want to be different, look at a 6.5 Weatherby magnum. It's a wildcat based off necking up a 257 Weatherby case to 6.5mm.
Guys I have the itch for a new deer hunting rifle. I'm a little different than most, as I am intrigued by what some would call "odd" Calibers. Here is what I have an itch for at the moment:
257 weatherby mag- not too odd
240 weatherby mag
257 Roberts
I have a 260 that's about that same general size, so this is purely a want not a need. It will be a deer, axis, audad, hog gun. Any suggestions or info good or bad lets hear it. I seem to have a soft spot for 6 or 6.5 mm guns. I've located a remington in 6.5 mm mag that's like new. Can't find a mark on it, but seller won't budge on price at all.
If it matters I have complete reloading setup, so can roll my own.
If you have a soft spot for the 6.5 go get a 264 Mag. Its balistics are better than the 6.5 Remington and there are more of them to keep the price balanced!
I'd look at the 240 WM but for me it would be a custom barrel of 28" with a 1:8 twist. This would allow you to shoot the 105 or better yet the 115 Bergers to some great velocity.
It's always been on my want list to have a smokin fast 6. To me it's a toss up, 240 weatherby brass is expensive and hard to find or a 6-06AI which requires fire-forming and hard to find dies. The other one that gets a lot of attention and is a bit faster would be the Gibbs.
Addressing the "3" you mentioned, I like the 257 Roberts, but nothing against the other 2. My TWO favorites thou, based on ammo availability/recoil/trajectory/price and numerous models/brands are the 270 & 25-06. Good luck and just buy what you want for the hell of it!!
257 wby would get my vote but the 240 wby would be great also.
257 roberts would be last on the list. It fits the "odd" round bill but is significantly slower and nowhere near as flat shooting as the other two that you mentioned.
Might consider a 6mm. The rifles are a little difficult to find used and there aren't currently any "inexpensive" manufacturers to my knowledge. It's basically a 243, just a different name which makes it "odd" and a bit more interesting IMO.
Well lots of good info for sure. Sure doesn't make it easier though. The 25-06 is also a close finisher, with available ammo. Guess we will see what develops. I'll post my choice when decided and purchased. But still open to any info or ideas.
There's an article or two on Chuck Hawks that compares trajectories, downrange energy, etc of lots of rounds. Might be a good resource to help you decide what suits you best for your application.
