    Caliber advice

Guys I have the itch for a new deer hunting rifle. I'm a little different than most, as I am intrigued by what some would call "odd" Calibers. Here is what I have an itch for at the moment:

257 weatherby mag- not too odd
    240 weatherby mag
    257 Roberts

I have a 260 that's about that same general size, so this is purely a want not a need. It will be a deer, axis, audad, hog gun. Any suggestions or info good or bad lets hear it. I seem to have a soft spot for 6 or 6.5 mm guns. I've located a remington in 6.5 mm mag that's like new. Can't find a mark on it, but seller won't budge on price at all.

If it matters I have complete reloading setup, so can roll my own.

I've always been a fan of the 257 roberts myself. Roll it up hot with a 100 grain TSX, and it'll kill lots. I mean lots! We also shoot a 110 grain accubond out of my dads #1. It also kills pretty well I just don't see the benefit in most hunting scenario's of the low caliber mags

I also love the 257 AI

257 wheatherby, 6.5x284 Norma, or the .264 win mag will be one of my next rifles.

257Wby works dandy on Axis. This one I used one of the Hornady Interlock factory loads. I borrowed this one from a friend. I was very impressed with it.

I have a .240 Weatherby Mag and really like it. I took the synthetic stock off and put a boyds stock on it, looks much better. The only thing that I dont like is the price of a box of shells, you will roll your own so I wouldn't worry about that. The .240 has been pulled out of the safe more than my 25-06 or 22-250 lately. Good luck!

25-06 is my favorite deer round--good for everything frome yotes to elk and everything in between. I run 120 grain bullets and most of the deer I've shot never took a step. Now my KID shot one that ran, but it was his first deer, and placement wasn't too good. 25-06 runs the same 257 bullet as the Wheelen, but I believe it has more powder behind it. It's one of the flatest shooting hardest hitting rounds out there. I've not shot anything at more than 250~275 yards, but wouldn't hesitate to push it further on whitetails.

Well, since you asked about axis and not whitetails, I suppose my answer wasn't too helpful

How about the 6.8 in an AR Just to be different.

257 wby gets my vote. Hands down my favorite rifle in the safe. (To be fair I don't have that many in the safe )

                      Weatherby 257 3.5" high at 100 yards110 gr accubond

                      +3.5" @ 100
                      +4" @ 200
                      +0.5" @ 300
                      -7" @ 400
                      -20" @ 500

                      It's a laser out to 400.

.224 TTH with 1:8 twist barrel. Shoot 80 grain berger vld. It's a hog, deer, exotics nightmare. Killed a lot of big hogs at 300-500 yds and they rarely take a step. Bullet penetrates about 4" then turns inside out. Bad part is rarely an exit wound. Shot a big west texas muley at 346 yds and ruined his day

Don't forget the .257 STW! More "odd" than the 257 Roy and a great round. I shoot Weatherbys from .224 to .460. The .460 is a tad overkill for whitetails etc., but .240 and .257 are great choices.
