    Another .223 Question

If you were going to purchase a new rifle, would you recommend any of the following? Looking mainly for varmint hunting and a doe here or there....nothing too long range and will be shooting factory loads. I think I'm pretty well settled on .223 but am open to options (22-250 maybe?)

Which do you prefer? Which provides the most value? Any others I should be considering?

    I haven't bought a rifle in 13 years

I did stop by the store this week and put my hands on a few. The Weatherby and Remington felt the nicest in hand. The Tikka was ok, and the the Ruger and Savage seemed very plasticy, though I'm sure they shoot just fine.

    Weatherby Vanguard S2
    Remington 700
    Tikka T3 Lite Synthetic
    Ruger American
    Savage Axis

My buddy has the Weatherby S2 and it's a killing machine... .223 should be suitable with proper shot placement

Weatherby or the Tikka would be my choices!

As far as I know they don't make the ruger American in 223 yet...

If I had my choice I'd go with the 700 just for the limitless upgrade options

It's on their website listed as new. I think the one I saw in the store was a .243

The Remington Model Seven is pretty nice also

The race in that list is between the 700 and tikka imo. Pick between those two

Ding, ding, ding. If you can find a Model Seven, get it. I have one in 223, and 7-08. Both stainless. Great guns. 7-08 is big enough for elk, and I don't mind toting it thru Colorado.

                      Well in that case

I'd start watching for used deals on these:

                      Weatherby Vanguard S2
                      Remington 700
                      Tikka T3
                      Howa 1500
                      Ruger M77 mkII

                      I wouldn't even consider these:

                      Ruger American
                      Savage Axis

My first recommendation will ALWAYS be a Remington 700.

But Tikka and Howa are making some fine rifles these days.

Have you considered the ar15 option? If so, rock river has several varmint rifles with heavy barrel.

                              X2 good advice

If I was just concerned about value in terms of price for performance I like the Tikka T3.
