I've got a savage axis .223 I got at cabelas on sale for $299 w/scope I got it to shoot coyotes with and to carry around in my truck that dang thang is a straight up tack driver out of the box

If you want to compare the savage axis to a Remington you need to compare it to the 770 as those are both company's budget choices in rifles. My buddy had a 770 in 7mag and he hated it. It shot great the first 2-3 shots then started to jump around as the barrel heated up. He hated it so much he sold it to me for $100. It stays in my truck and I love it. I've never had a scenario where I've needed more than one shot with it and I'm not a bench or completion shooter so as long as the first two shots are on I'm fine with it. All that being said, for what you want it for I would go with the axis and spend a few more $ on the scope and mounts.

When I replaced the trigger, which was a couple of years back, I was told you couldn't do any trigger work on the 8 pound factory trigger. I was just tickled when I found that Timney made a replacement trigger. I jumped on it immediately because I hated that original factory trigger so much. At the time I couldn't find an alternative, I'm glad you found a cheaper way.
