If you want to compare the savage axis to a Remington you need to compare it to the 770 as those are both company's budget choices in rifles. My buddy had a 770 in 7mag and he hated it. It shot great the first 2-3 shots then started to jump around as the barrel heated up. He hated it so much he sold it to me for $100. It stays in my truck and I love it. I've never had a scenario where I've needed more than one shot with it and I'm not a bench or completion shooter so as long as the first two shots are on I'm fine with it. All that being said, for what you want it for I would go with the axis and spend a few more $ on the scope and mounts.

            Well there you go.
When I replaced the trigger, which was a couple of years back, I was told you couldn't do any trigger work on the 8 pound factory trigger. I was just tickled when I found that Timney made a replacement trigger. I jumped on it immediately because I hated that original factory trigger so much. At the time I couldn't find an alternative, I'm glad you found a cheaper way.

My 14 year old daughter has the Axis in .243. Other than the factory trigger it's a great shooting rifle. At the price point you're at I'd throw the Marlin XL7 in the mix. I have one in .270 that is a flat out shooter!

I bought a mossberg 270 awhile back for 229 at acadey fir a truck gun
that sucker shoots a ragged hole at 100 yds.
it ain't pretty but it performs

I'll put it out front that I'm a big remington 700 fan. For the money, I don't think you can beat the overall quality, but the Savages can really be shooters and they have a good price tag. I think either of these they would suit your needs as a solid truck gun. Just my .02 cents
