For a budget gun I'd recommend the H&R / NEF Handi Rifle. I love mine in 243. I have shot/owned both the ones you listed and wasnt impressed.

Beyond that I wont say as last time I commented on a gun thread I got flamed. So thats my suggestion and Im out.

You'll also save money on ammo....cause you'll spend half your time trying to get the stuck shell casings out of those guns. Not sure if the CVA has the same problems, but a quick Google search about ejector problems will make you go with a bolt action.
The one I had in 7mm-08 would hang up constantly.

Look around at all and any academy. I was just told they clearanced the stalker elite in 7mm-08 for 89.88!!!!!!!

Anybody see one at that price...pick it up for me and I'll make it worth your effort.

That was my first thought when I left academy. But I called Beaumont, humble, college station all Houston, San Antonio and Austin stores with no avail. All computers show zero. Apparently the 20" version was 89.88 and the 22" was 149.88. The 24" barrel is reg price at 209.99. Only the short barrels were clearanced and are all gone state wide !!!

im going to academy in college station today after work and I will update....im wanting to get one for my wife but im stuck between 22.250 and 7mm-08 ......any suggestions on 22.250 will it take down a deer on a well placed behind the shoulder shot??

Buddy at work has the Axis in .308 The magazine rattles like crazy in the stock. On occasion he has feed issues and has to push the mag up so the bolt will feed a round. Accuracy is decent. Not a MOA gun. It will hunt.

Yes it will. I have shot several deer in the shoulder with no problem. But I like to try my skill and neck or head shoot them if I can. Great all around caliber IMO

they didnt have these guns for 89.99 at academy in college station.....they had the .243 and 7mm-08 for 179.99 CVA Hunter open sights or one with the scope for 249.99 but the scope is a little 3x9x32mm so i opted for the opena and sight and had them mount a 3x9x50mm simmons they had on sale for 39.99.. and will well see how it shoots tomorrow.
