Use magnum loads to get pass through where the deer at least have a chance to run and you can use your tracking skills.

I had concerns about the bullet staying together until I shot 3-4 hogs with them. The first animal I killed with them was a sow around 130 lbs. I shot her square in the shoulder just to see what kind of penetration the bullet would get. Upon impact she went chest to the ground and bulldozed about 20 feet. I had gotten a complete pass thru and her chest cavity looked like something out of a horror movie. My kids have shot them ever since and zero lost animals.

I seriously doubt that bullet would punch through a shoulder if you inadvertently shot a deer there. Not to mention this bullet has a crappy sectional density and ballistic coefficient. If I were to buy loaded cartridges, I would go with the Hornady Superformance 80 grain gmx. I personally hand load Speer 85 grain btsp (ballistic coefficient of .404) and push them at 3250 fps. Puts hogs, deer, and yotes on their butt. I shoot that bullet because I want the flexibility to easily kill any of the prior mentioned species.
Before modern firearms and incredible loads, they were killing deer with spears that evolved to muskets. If a deer gets hit, it will probably kill it. The question is HOW fast and does it drop in its tracks, or does it run a little.
I like the drop in the tracks and doesn't move. I agree with you on the shoulder is not the ideal shot with this round, but it still performed excellent. As with archery, there are the sweet spots to shoot and spots not to shoot.
