I prefer the 2nd focal plane and moa. Both work just fine. kinda like the difference between standard and metric.

I have a buckmaster 4.5x14x40 with a mildot reticle on a 308 and i have held groups out to 575 on a 1'x1' area fairly easy with cross winds. I would say a top magnification of atleast 14x and a reticle with windage and elevation holds in it. Out at 500yds wind can be an issue so i wouldnt go with something that just has elevation holds on it. I choose mil-dot for the ability of ranging targets with it and the hold overs it has.

The link I posted is hands down THE BEST glass you are going to get in your price range.

Don't get so hung up on high magnification. You give up clarity and light transmission ability so it will be useless when you may need it most anyway.

No offense but if you don't understand the difference in the reticles and FFP vs SFP then you don't need that scope.

And Zeiss glass is better than Vortex glass period.
