What kind of scope to use

What power and magnification would you guys recommend for shooting from the 200-500 yard range?

    Also which reticle is best?

Will be going on a 257 wby mag

Also recommendations for vortex are appreciated because I have a hook up there. Thanks again guys

    a 4.4x14 at minimum

I prefer the LEU Varmint Hunters reticle , although some say it's to busy

with ballistic apps, enter data into your iphone and yardages are provided for corresponding crosshairs

                Is a 6-24x50 too much?
Im only worried about the clarity when it starts getting above 15 power
Would the clarity be okay at that magnification with a 500-900$ scope?

If you insist on Vortex, look at the HST scope. It should fall well within your price range.

                  Otherwise I would look at a Leupold VX-6 3-18 x 44.

Or SWFA had a Swarovski Z3 3-12 x 50 on the sample list yesterday for under $850.

SWFA is an optics manufacturing specializing in rifle scopes built for tactical, hunting, and long range shooting known for quality and precision optics.

I would stay away from really high magnification unless you are buying very high end glass like Sawrovski or Leica.

I have that Z3 3-12x scope and a Z5 5-25x and I can tell a difference at the top end even with outstanding glass.

My 257 wby wears an 8.5-25x50 30mm tube VX-3 and I love it. Shot it yesterday to confirm zero at 100. Clarity has never been a problem with the VX3 for me.

Breaks down like this for me.

                      +3.5" @ 100
                      +4" @ 200
                      +0.5" @ 300
                      -7" @ 400
                      -21" @ 500

(I wont be shooting it at 500 yards until I put it on paper out to that range) but would let her rip out to 300 yards no problem. BTW get a Muzzle Break on your 257 wby and you can watch impact shots through the scope

I have a few VX3 4.5-14X50 and 6.5-20X50 on some other rifles in the safe and I wouldnt go under the 6.5-20x50 for the 257 WBY.

The VX6 is very cool, but still to pricy for what it is... Until they get cheaper I will continue to pick up used VX3's 8.5 is plenty low power, and 25 is awesome at judging deer at distance

i dint like the feel of the zeiss, feels a little cheap to me. If you have the hook-up with vortex, just get the pst 6-24 and call it a day.
