I was close, and got his hand pointed safely down range, but it was a scary couple seconds. With a single shot, or better yet, a bolt action repeater than can be single-loaded, when the shot is fired, the gun is safe. Besides that, it teaches that the first shot is the only one that's likely to count. There's plenty of time later for the fun of a semi-auto when the basics of gun safety are instilled in his routine. The single shot you bought him, if it's a quality gun, will be used to teach his kids to shoot.
I bought my youngest a CZ bolt action repeater. Very accurate with a good trigger. That's important to me, as I wanted to make it easy for him to hit his target, otherwise, it's no fun. He still has that gun, plus a S&W M&P 15, and he is almost twenty. My two cents.
I spent a lot more time thinking about this since 2013 when I suggested a 10/22. My son got a single shot 22 for his first rifle last year.

I still have all my stuff but just no real time with my new job to keep it going.
I should dip all the stuff I want to do for myself and then sale it.
