Only reason I didn't say 257 Roy is ammo is big $$ unless you reload.

Really depends on what you consider long range. Some people, that's 500-600 yards. If you are talking 1000 plus, the bare minimum is a 6.5x284. Another good 338 caliber is 338edge. It's a 300 ultra mag blown out to 338. The shoulder angles are different than a standard 338 ultra. If you're not into reloading, a 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag, and 338 lapua would my be my first choices for 1000+ yard shots. You will have a good assortment of factory ammo available.

.308 will do all that, cheap to feed too. If you reload you can pick up good brass for cheap. Dont reinvent the wheel on this......been a many a gook and raghead taken off with a .308 at well over 400 yards.
NOW, with that being said I have a nice .308 that is 1000 yard capable if I do my part. I want to get into shooting further and the 300 Win Mag is a great round and also the 338 Lapua. If you dont wana go broke feeding it I would suggest you get something that is common like those two. I know of several ranges that wont let you on the place with a 338 Lapua / 50 cal type boom sticks though. Keep that in mind.Last edited by glen1978; 09-12-2013, 08:21 PM.

You already have two very capable 500 yard rifles in the 7mm-08 and 270. With the 270 and a good high ballistic coefficient bullet like the Remington factory loaded 130 gr accutip sight in 1.5" high and you will be dead on at 200-225 yards and drop around 37 inches at 500 yards. As a comparison the 7mm rem mag with 150 grain accutip sighted 1.3" high at 100 drops 34" at 500 and the 300 win mag with 180 grain accutip sighted 1.5" high at 100 drops 39" at 500.
Also your 7mm-08 with 140 grain accutips has more energy at 500 and less drop than the 308 with 165 grain accutips.
I used the accutips on all the loads compared above to keep all of the Ballistic coefficients in the same ball park with the bullet weights selected.
The 270 wsm actually edges out the 7mm rem mag in energy and drop at 500 yards if they are both shooting 150 grain bullets.
I personally have a 300 rum, 7mm rem mag, 270, 243, 25-06, 257 weatherby 308 and many others. If I go rifle hunting and I know shots are inside of 500 yards then I usually carry my 270 or 257 weatherby. The whole key regardless of caliber is practicing at those ranges and building up your confidence. Spend money on a good scope. I can tell you a deer in the cross hairs of a 9x scope at 500 yards is tiny and the cross hairs will almost cover up the whole animal.
