When I was a little kid my dad had me shooting at dove with my Mossberg bolt action 410 while he sat under a shade tree with that 16 and watched them fly by. After shooting about a box and a half, and having a pond full of feathers and no birds I stormed down to where he was and leaned my gun up against a tree. I made him take off his vest (with all the 16 ga shells in it) and I grabbed that 16 and headed back to where I was. Came back with a limit about an hour later.

My dad sold that 410 promptly and bought me a 20 ga 1100. I don't have the 1100 anymore, but I do have the 16.

Try patterning it first...that may tell you a lot

I have a Wingmaster (circa 1971) in 20 gauge that I passed down to my son. It has a 28 inch bbl with a modified choke but shoots tighter than any full choke shotgun that I have ever shot.

take it out and pattern it. See where it's truly hitting. That will answer any issues.

Back then almost everything was full or modified choke and you seldom saw an improved cylinder choke. I had the same problem with my full/modified side by side. When I had the full barrel bored to improved cylinder I then had a dove killing tool.
My thoughts were that the plastic wadding made everything shoot one choke tighter.
AT Least one choke tighter !!!

My dad has the same gun, bought back around 1960. Full choke barrel. Kicks like **** mule. He took it to a gunsmith and come to find out, there was a run of barrel's that was choked to extra-full for some reason. VERY tight pattern. That's what I learned to shoot with. He still has it.
