    old Wingmaster

I have a old 870 wingmaster 16 gauge my grandfather bought in 1955. I have two barrels for it. One is modified and the other full. For some reason I can't hit anything with the full choke barrel. Any Ideas?

Not going to be much help on the accuracy issue but I have the same gun, probably about the same age, was passed down to me by my dad. It will be going to the field with me tomorrow morning. Hope you get yours figured out.

      Tighter constriction. Practice more lol

Take it out and pattern it. See where it's truly hitting. That will answer any issues.

Wow, I have the same gun I think - but mine only has a modified barrel. My dad bought it used a looong time ago. It's a dove killing machine if you can find shells.

I will admit that one day I took it squirrel hunting and I took 15 shells with me. I came back with one squirrel and no shells. And the one I hit was running from me. He must have ran into the pattern just right. I will pattern it soon.

I had my wife's uncle refinish mine and it looks real nice!

Get a 20! I use a 20 for deer, turkey, pig, and all birds.

I have the same gun. I took mine to a gunsmith and had them put in a removable choke. Now I make it what ever choke I want.

That gun was made before plastic wads. Back then the wadding was just fiber or paper between the shot and powder. When the plastic wads came out (power-piston)in the 60's I think they all shot a lot tighter pattern. Back then almost everything was full or modified choke and you seldom saw an improved cylinder choke. I had the same problem with my full/modified side by side. When I had the full barrel bored to improved cylinder I then had a dove killing tool.
My thoughts were that the plastic wadding made everything shoot one choke tighter.

Can they bore the barrel out to make it modified? Or should I just put chokes in it?

yes, the barrel can be reamed. if it has any value that may hurt it. as will removable chokes. but for shooting purposes, i'd go with the removables. why would you want 2 modified barrels?

Well my other barrel is sawed off. My uncle was hunting and fell and got snow jammed up the barrel. Then a rabbit took off and the barrel split on the end. My grandfather sawed the barrel off to 23" and it is awesome with slugs out to 100 yards. So my other barrel is more improved cylinder. It is my my Ohio slug gun when we do deer drives or I hunt thick cover.

if it has been sawed off, it is cylinder bore, not improved. heck of a quail gun, if in fact quail ever make a comeback.
