I kill dozens per year with ultramax 55gr SP's. I've used FMJ'S they work just as good. The only ones I didn't like we're 40gr ballistic tips and 52gr hollow points.
Don't get all fancy. Just get something that stays together and hit em low, and tight in behind or through the shoulder.
Doesn't matter if you shoot them in the head. I've tried a couple shots behind the shoulder on them with .223 and didn't find either. I strictly hit them in the head now unless they are running and then it is shoot till they fall.
All my shots have been with 69 to 77 grain SMKs which may be why vitals hits haven't been successful.
Barnes Triple Shock (TSX) - that will flat hammer anything you want to hunt. I see where Remington is loading a TSX now and marketing them specifically as a feral hog load. They call it the Hog Hammer and load it in 7 different calibers. For the 223 they have it in the 62 gr TSX.
My wife bought me some zombie max 55gr. Z max bullet. Any good?? On hogs not zombies...
Mike, I popped one running last year using 55gr SP. One behind the shoulder and he rolled up right there (he did wiggle a little bit). He was only about 120 lbs. Like someone else already said though, in the ear with dang near anything and they will drop. For the ones running...if they don't drop with the first shot...keep shooting.
I shoot several in the shoulder with 55gr softies. Never had one go too far. I like headshots, but sometimes they're too far.
Biggest thing on shoulder shots, if you're going to try them, is NOT to shoot them in the same place as deer. Don't shoot high shoulder. They'll run forever. Aim LOW LOW LOW. And super tight in that shoulder. The "plate" everyone talks about is high shoulder. You shouldn't have to worry about that shooting them right, unless you do it on accident, or they're running. In those cases I just keep shooting till they quit running. Hit em all over.
