I turned an old 870 into a dedicated slug gun a few years ago. Mossberg makes a rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount for a Rem 870 at about half the price of a Rem barrel. I shoot 2 different slugs, 3 " Rem accutip and 2 3/4" Hornady . I found that if I sight the 3" accutips in at 100 yards, the 2 3/4 Hornady's are dead on at 150 yards (100 grains lighter and 100 FPS faster). I shot a hog last year with it behind the ear (he dropped) and when I skinned him out the slug had severed his spine at the neck. Killed a few deer with it too. Haven't really had a long shot yet. I smoked a raccoon under the feeder at 75 yards one night waiting on pigs because my buddy said I couldn't hit it with a slug.
One bit of advice, don't hold it loose like a rifle. Your shots will walk all over the paper. Hold it really tight (I mean really tight) into your shoulder and your groups will look like they are supposed to.
I have a Cabelas 3-9x40 shotgun scope mounted on it.
